Charlie Cox has set his hopes high as he has expressed his desire for Scarlett Johansson to appear as Black Widow in Daredevil. In launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the vast library of characters at Marvel's disposal have been split up to various platforms. While the movies get most of the attention, TV shows have continued to populate the MCU with new heroes, but ones that are well known to comic readers. Even though these properties all exist in the same universe, there has yet to be any crossover between the movies and TV, or even between the TV shows themselves - not including The Defenders.

For those familiar with these characters' long history on the page, the division between Marvel Studios and Marvel Television has resulted in some close relationships in the comics not being shown on the screen. One of these is between Daredevil and Black Widow, who have had multiple attempts at a romance. Despite the odds, Cox is still holding out hope that it will one day play out on Netflix.

Thanks to an interview by Sensacine shared on Instagram (via MCU Exchange), Cox was recently asked about potential characters he wants to see incorporated into Daredevil's life moving forward. If it were up to the star, he'd find a way to bring one of the MCU's most prominent female heroes to the small screen.

Charlie says he wants to have Scarlett Johansson in the Netflix shows since Daredevil and Black Widow have dated in the comics and Finn says "Nice!" They also agree that Mark Ruffalo is the best Hulk! My very rough translation of the question: What Marvel character do you want to have appear in the series? #marvel #netflix #defenders #thedefenders #daredevil #mattmurdock #charliecox #ironfist #dannyrand #finnjones #darefist #randock #jox #bromance A post shared by darefistagram (@charliefinn_jox) on

Disregarding the unlikely nature of this one day happening, bringing Black Widow to Netflix would be a big get for a variety of reasons. Not only would it finally be a true crossover between the films and TV, but the star power Johansson has would instantly make whatever season/series she would appear in one of the biggest TV moments for Marvel. It would surely prove to be a big hit in the ratings department, but also give the creators a chance to explore aspects of their comic history.

Unfortunately for Cox's hopes and fans, this is a possibility that seems far to slim right now. Black Widow is one of the most prominent figures in the films and interest continues to be shared for her to one day get a movie of her own. Even though there is an argument to made that the character and her story would better fit with the Netflix world and give Marvel the ability to freely tell that story without a PG-13 mandate, a Black Widow series has never truly been considered. Then again, if she isn't getting a solo movie in Phase 4 or beyond and makes it out of the next two Avengers films alive, there would be no better place for Johansson to pop up briefly or for a longer stint than on Netflix in Daredevil.

Marvel’s The Defenders premieres on August 18, followed by The Punisher season 1 later this fall. Premiere dates for the new seasons of DaredevilJessica JonesLuke Cage, and Iron Fist have yet to be announced.
