Making the decision to remake a film is always a risky one, especially when it's such a popular one. However, 2005's Charlie And The Chocolate Factory did a fantastic job of telling this classic story while introducing a modern twist and adding further details to the characters to make the movie feel unique.

While the story is over-the-top, and the fantastical world of the factory and the excitement of the sweets and chocolate help to make the movie exciting, it is the characters that give the film heart. They each have their own backstory and showcase their personality and intelligence throughout the movie, but which member of this excellent film is the most intelligent?

Augustus Gloop

Augustus Gloop 2005

Augustus Gloop is showcased the least out of all the main children within the movie, which is mainly because he is the first character that falls victim to his own greed. Everything Augustus does is for himself, putting his desire to eat above anything else.

A lot of the characters have negative traits in this movie, and his is certainly greed. Augustus doesn't talk as much as the other characters, and, because of that, he doesn't get to showcase his intelligence at the same levels as most of the others.

Violet Beauregarde

Violet

Violet Beauregarde might be quite obnoxious and arrogant at times, but there's no denying that she can be quite intelligent at times. She seems to have an answer for absolutely everything, and, even though that's not always the correct answer, she at least tries her best.

She clearly has quite an interesting background and comes from quite a wealthy environment. She showcases that at points with the way that she talks about things and how confident that she is.

Veruca Salt

Much like Violet, Veruca Salt is not a nice person. However, she is also from a very wealthy background, and that allows her to have a better education than the others, which she has no problem bragging about. She quite happily talks about how much better she is than everyone else, but, at times, she does showcase that with her intelligence.

She is certainly a smart character, and, even though she can be very unlikeable, she does seem to know a lot about different topics. She tries to impart that onto the other characters, who tend not to listen, mainly due to her attitude.

Mike Teavee

Mike Teavee 2005

None of the children in the movie really get to showcase their true intelligence, as this isn't the type of movie to allow that. But, the fact that Mike Teavee is one of the last children standing does showcase that he has some form of intelligence about him.

While his big subject knowledge comes within television and the media world, there's no denying that it is a useful thing to know a lot about. He dedicates all of his time to that world, and he has learned a lot about it, which he proudly shows in how he talks.

Mr. & Mrs. Bucket

Bucket Family

Mr. and Mrs. Bucket are given a little bit more of a personality and backstory within the remake, with Mr. Bucket not even being part of the original. They're shown to be hardworking individuals who are doing their best for their family and they're all about teamwork.

They don't have a lot of money, but they showcase their intelligence by being able to pull together, no matter what difficulties they are going through. They try to always ensure that their family is happy, and that's an intelligence within itself.

Oompa-Loompas

Oompa Loompa

The Oompa-Loompas don't quite get to showcase their personality as much as other characters in the movie, mainly taking on the role of supporting characters. However, they're certainly shown more in this remake than they were in the original, with more of a backstory being given to them.

They're certainly very smart characters, creating their own communication and always working together as a team perfectly, which is something that requires a lot of intelligence. Their ability to quickly put together a musical number is also very impressive.

Charlie Bucket

Charlie Bucket 2005

Out of all the children in the movie, Charlie Bucket is undoubtedly the most intelligent. Unlike the other characters, he is quite mature for his age, which is mainly due to the circumstances he grows up in, having to grow up a lot quicker due to the extra responsibilities he has within the house.

Charlie likes to take a step back and think about things before acting, and, while he might not have the expensive education that some of the characters do, he still showcases great intelligence. He makes sensible decisions, and that is what steps him apart from the other characters.

Grandpa Joe Bucket

Grandpa Joe Bucket is a warm and kind character in both versions of the movie, and he also happens to be one of the most intelligent as well. A big part of that is the fact that he is much older than the other characters in the film, and that experience allows him to shine through.

He showcases his intelligence by providing a lot of great advice, mainly to Charlie. He always seems to know exactly what to say and when which is purely down to how smart he is as a person. Joe is excellent at taking a step back and working out everyone else, clearly seeing that each character had key flaws.

Dr. Wilbur Wonka

Wilbur Wonka

Dr. Wilbur Wonka is a character that was added specifically for the 2005 version in a bid to provide more of a backstory to Willy Wonka, explaining how he came to be the way he is. He's quite a cold and grumpy character, but there's no doubting his intelligence, being played excellently by Christopher Lee.

Wilbur Wonka might not be everyone's favorite character, but he proves himself to be a very smart man. His occupation alone proves that he has great intelligence, and, even though he uses to ruing some of the fun for his young son, it shows he is a smart man.

Willy Wonka

Willy Wonka

Johnny Depp's version of this classic character might be quite eccentric and over the top, there is no doubt that he's an intelligent person. He showcases his fantastic smartness through the incredible creativity that he has, helping him to create all of the amazing sweets and chocolate that his company provides.

He is a very good judge of character, as well, easily analyzing how each of his guests will behave, which is another example of his intelligence. While this version of Willy Wonka doesn't have particularly great people skills, he is certainly a smart person.
