It has been three years since The Vampire Diaries ended and fans still can't get over the way some characters' stories ended. While Delena fans were delighted they got their happy ending, Steroline and Bonenzo fans were devastated to learn that their ships weren't endgame.

Some viewers also believed certain characters deserved better endings to the ones they got, deeming some as anti-climatic and underwhelming. Would you like some examples? From Sheriff Forbes to Enzo, keep reading to discover which 10 characters deserved a lot more.

Elizabeth "Liz" Forbes

Liz Forbes in The Vampire Diaries

One of the more heartbreaking scenes on the show had to be the death of Sheriff Forbes. Despite being a huge hindrance in the first couple of seasons, fans couldn't help but admire Liz's brave and fearless attitude in the face of adversity. They also loved watching her and Caroline reconnect after years of tension and distance.

So when it was revealed that she had cancer, everyone was devastated by the news. Even more so when the gang realized they couldn't cure her - even with vampire blood. She really did suffer a lot in the last few months of her life.

Katherine Pierce

It may be a controversial entry but some fans believe that Katherine deserved a better ending. Katherine was a character fans loved to hate. She may have been selfish, manipulative, and cruel, but something was intriguing about her. Despite being a vampire, she was, ironically, the most humane and flawed out of all the characters.

When Katherine died after succumbing to old age, fans believed this was a fitting ending for her character. After all, she finally found peace. However, the writers decided to "revive" her twice so she could torment the town again. Bringing her back as the Queen of Hell just undermined her character growth and reduced her to a simple villain.

Jenna Sommers

Jenna Sommers was another character who deserved better. Starring prominently in the first two seasons, Jenna was a fierce and family-orientated woman. She may not have been responsible but she did all she could to support Elena and Jeremy in the aftermath of their parents' death.

However, what fans couldn't stand was the woman's oblivious and naïve nature. Sadly, when Jenna did find out about the supernatural occurrences, she was instantly killed. She had so much more to give.

Olivia Parker

Liv Parker in The Vampire Diaries

When Liv first came to Mystic Falls, she was shown to rub up a lot of the residents the wrong way. She was rude, sarcastic, and very deceiving. However, once she earned the trust of the Mystic Falls gang and prevented Tyler's curse, Liv proved to be an enjoyable character.

It was just a shame she was killed off just as her relationship with Tyler was taking off. There's no doubt that she suffered one of the show's saddest deaths. Although she valiantly sacrifices herself to save Tyler, it was horrifying to watch as he smothered her to death. If anything, it would have been a fitting tribute if she died taking Kai down.

Tyler Lockwood

Considering Tyler had been a fan-favorite character, many fans thought that his character's ending was a little... underwhelming. For years, fans watched as the werewolf faced off against The Originals, vampire hunters, and psychopathic warlocks. They also saw him come out of these battles unscathed.

Instead, Tyler was killed permanently by Damon after he stumbled into one of his traps. Was it a twist no one saw coming? Yes. A fitting tribute? No. With everything he endured, it was definitely a poor send-off.

Lexi Branson

One of the biggest mistakes the writers made was not promoting Lexi to a recurring character. When the vampire   first made an appearance in season 1, she was an instant hit with fans. She was lovable, quirky, and had a great sense of humor. The writers also struck gold with her and Stefan’s partnership.

However, for some reason, the writers decided to kill her off. Fans then only got brief glimpses of Lexie’s past with the Salvatore brothers. It’s just a shame that the viewers never got to see her develop relationships with the other characters. Could you imagine how iconic Caroline and Lexi would have been?

Josette "Jo" Laughlin

One of the characters fans believed got short-changed was Jo. Introduced in season 6, Jo immediately struck up a bond with Elena after the vampire enlisted in her pre-med class at college. She also became a key asset to the group, assisting in cover-ups and providing magical and medical expertise.

However, Jo's time on the show was limited as the witch was murdered by Kai on her wedding day. To make matters worse, Jo and Alaric had only just discovered that she was pregnant, which made her death even sadder. Although she made one more appearance on Legacies, fans wish she got more than a few stolen moments.

Lorenzo "Enzo" St. John

Enzo was another character the fans felt got short-changed in the end. Although fans didn't take to the vampire when he was introduced in season 5, they soon changed their minds when they saw how loyal and considerate he could be. Especially when it came to Damon and Bonnie.

Although his romance with Bonnie came as a surprise, it was the one fans welcomed with open arms. After all, Enzo was seen to have his fair share of tragedy too - being abandoned by his family and losing Maggie and Lily. It was nice that he got a brief glimpse of happiness. However, fans were so annoyed when he was killed off. They wanted to see his origin story more.

Stefan Salvatore

Let's be honest, no one was really surprised when Stefan ended up sacrificing himself to save Mystic Falls? As soon as the fans learned of Stefan's past, it became clear he had a hero complex. To the very end, the vampire was selfless, noble, and very compassionate. He would do anything to ensure that his family and friends were happy.

However, the viewers couldn't help but be a little disappointed when Stefan died twenty-four hours after he got married. For once, fans would have liked it if Stefan put himself first for once.

Bonnie Bennett

If there was one person who deserved better, it was Mystic Falls' favorite witch, Bonnie Bennett. It's no secret that Bonnie never had the easiest of times, with the witch suffering and undergoing more trauma than any other character.

For years, fans watched as she was tormented by psychopathic warlocks, narcissistic vampires, and pesky werewolves. Bonnie was also seen to make some great sacrifices to ensure her family and friends were safe. Just as it looked like she was happy, the writers then ruined it by killing off her soulmate. Bonnie deserved so much more than traveling the world.
