Over the course of its six-season run, Gossip Girl introduced us to a whole host of interesting characters. We got to know the ins and outs of the lives of a fair few of them, and whether we loved or hated them, it was like we’d followed them through the most important years of their lives.

However, a lot of these characters endured moments that seemed to make no sense. Whether it was a temporary blip in the writers’ understanding of their own characters or a semi-believable change of heart, we’ve listed the biggest inconsistencies of character the show ever had.

Georgina’s Temporary Redemption

Georgina seemed to exist in the world of Gossip Girl for no reason other than to cause havoc and involve herself in the drama of everyone else’s lives. She was a strange, suspicious character but ended up being rather neutral in her impact.

The one thing that made absolutely no sense, however, is the brief period during season two when she all of a sudden became a born-again Christian.

Bart Bass’ Fake Death

Robert John Burke as Bart Bass in Gossip Girl

This is one of the most overt cases of character inconsistency ever. Quite literally, Bart Bass was dead, and then he wasn’t (and then he was, but for real).

Bart’s death was pretty much the only major death in the show, but after four seasons, the showrunners decided to undo it, bringing him back only for him to be thrown off of a building by his own son.

The Existence Of Scott Ronson

gossip girl Lily Scott Rufus

Out of nowhere, it was revealed that Lily and Rufus had a child together, named Scott Ronson. First of all, this turns the relationship Dan and Serena have into something very strange because they share a sibling but still get married anyway...

He pretty much disappeared from the show and everyone’s thoughts as soon as he arrived, which didn’t make much sense.

Jenny’s Line Of Work

Jenny’s desire to be a fashion designer is a very clear and consistent part of her Gossip Girl characterization. However, the whole point of her inability is one is built around the fact that she is too young.

Eventually, this sort of goes out of the window and no one seems to care how young she is, allowing her to become pretty successful.

Vanessa’s Disappearance

Jessica Szohr as Vanessa Abrams in Gossip Girl

Vanessa is known to Gossip Girl fans as one of the most annoying and unnecessary characters in the show, so her departure was a welcome relief to many.

However, a major part of her character was her desire to involve herself in everything, so leaving, never to return, doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Dan And Chuck’s Friendship

Chuck attacks Dan as Blair and nate watch on Gossip Girl.

In the very first episode of Gossip Girl, Chuck tried to rape Jenny. Of course, Dan is furious and remains so for a while. But this is a completely unforgivable crime, no matter how much someone changes.

The fact that Chuck and Dan are friends at the end of the show simply makes no logical sense whatsoever.

Blair And Chuck’s Relationship

Obviously, Blair and Chuck are perfect for each other. The fact that the two ended up together was always going to happen, but they went over more bumps than most relationships ever would.

They’re in love, yes, but the idea of them being happy together all of a sudden after all of the drama doesn’t really add up. One would think they might both be a little wary of what the other might one day do.

Dan And Blair’s Relationship

Blair leans on Dan on a bench in Gossip Girl

During the long period of time in which Blair and Chuck were at each other’s throats not being together, Dan and Blair ended up together. It was the lowest moment in the show in terms of quality programming, and it simply made no sense from either perspective.

Blair looked down upon Dan, and Dan just thought Blair was manipulative and snobbish. The whole thing is just totally illogical.

Dan Being Gossip Girl

Speaking of illogical, the conclusion to the whole show not only makes no sense but can also be conclusively proven to be simply untrue. There were plenty of times when it was shown to be impossible for Dan to be Gossip Girl, not least the many times when we saw him react to GG blasts while sitting on his own.

Beyond that, even if it could be true, some of the stuff he spread about his sister and future wife was beyond the pale.

Everyone Remaining Dan’s Friend

This isn’t an inconsistency specific to one character, but pretty much everyone in the entire show. The reveal at the conclusion of the show makes it known that someone who pretended to be their friend for years was secretly manipulating them, spying on them, and directly ruining their lives for years, all while lying and pretending to be someone he wasn’t.

The idea that anyone could even be in the same room as Dan after this makes no sense.
