A new clip from Chaos Walking turns Tom Holland's thoughts into a weapon for self-defense. Back in 2016 when Chaos Walking's development took off, the movie appeared to be one of the most exciting upcoming potential franchise starters. Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland were cast in the lead roles after breaking out as Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Meanwhile, Doug Liman was attached to direct after delivering Edge of Tomorrow a few years prior.
The movie originally received a 2019 release date from Lionsgate and added Mads Mikkelsen, Nick Jonas, David Oyelowo, and more to its cast. But after production started in 2017, Chaos Walking was hit with multiple delays. The studio wanted reshoots that were made more difficult due to Holland and Ridley's busy schedules, and the result was the movie missing its intended release. Lionsgate eventually pulled off the Chaos Walking reshoots and delayed the film to early 2021. Now after waiting several years, Choas Walking is nearing its release and is in the final stretch of its marketing campaign.
Lionsgate debuted a new clip from Choas Walking exclusively at IGN Fan Fest. The new footage is less than a minute long and focuses on an encounter between Holland's Todd Hewitt and Jonas' Davy Prentiss Jr. During the clip, Hewitt uses his "Noise" to project his thoughts as being real, which allows him to send a giant snake snapping at Prentiss Jr. This nearly starts a fight between the boys before Mikkelsen's Mayor Prentiss rides into town.
In the world of Chaos Walking, each living creature possesses the power of the Noise, which is the result of a disease that infected all living things. This clip shows several different ways that people can use their Noise. Holland doesn't speak much during the scene, but his thoughts are heard throughout thanks to the Noise. But these abilities also allow his thoughts to materialize as if they were real, which is why Prentiss Jr. is so startled by the snake that appears.
Since the Noise is one of the defining and unique elements of Chaos Walking, it isn't surprising to see it at the forefront of the marketing materials still. But, the movie's marketing has been condensed to a short time period and has yet to generate nearly as much excitement as it should. This could hurt the chances of Chaos Walking becoming a major hit that launches a new franchise, especially since it is releasing in theaters and on VOD during a pandemic. At this point, the movie will need incredibly strong reviews and great word of mouth to break through the flood of content on the horizon.
