Channel Zero: Candle Cove created an instant horror icon with the Tooth Child - AKA The Tooth Fairy - but what exactly is this creature? Creepypasta describes a type of horror fiction that emerged with the rise of the internet, and often takes the form of stories that feel like they could be true. Slender Man would be the biggest creepypasta creation, being a faceless, impossibly tall monster who started out being photoshopped into the background of photos while a mythology built up around him over time. Creepypasta has spawned all sorts of stories, however, including "Jeff The Killer" and "Ted The Caver."

Despite the viral popularity surrounding these tales, there haven't been many high-profile creepypasta adaptations. The 2018 Slender Man movie bombed while other films like Living Dark: The Story Of Ted The Caver didn't garner much attention. Channel Zero was a SYFY anthology series that adapted different creepypasta stories for each season. Season 1 covered "Candle Cove," which is considered one of the best creepypasta stories, while the fourth and final season was based upon "Hidden Door."

Channel Zero: Candle Cove involves a child psychologist named Mike who returns to his Ohio hometown, and investigates the disappearance of several children, including his twin brother Eddie, years before. This seems to be linked to a kid's pirate show Mike and his friends watched when they were young called Candle Cove, which featured disturbing characters like the Skin-Taker. Mike is later told by his mother Marla the show never existed and he was watching static whenever he claimed it was on TV, which is the twist of the original creepypasta.

Channel Zero: Candle Cove also introduced the memorably disturbing Tooth Child, or Tooth Fairy, creature. Like the name implies this monster is made entirely of teeth, and while it doesn't get much screentime throughout the show's six episodes, the visual alone sticks with viewers. Channel Zero: Candle Cove later reveals that it was Mike who killed his own brother, who had developed psychic powers and was using them to murder other children. Eddie's spirit survived, however, and he brainwashed a former teacher named Frances to help him return.

Thanks to her harvesting human teeth, Eddie can physically manifest as the Tooth Child, but he wants to take over his twin's body. Eddie also created the Candle Cove show, which is used to brainwash other children and they become minions of Frances. Channel Zero: Candle Cove ends with Mike being taken to a sort of netherworld where Eddie has existed since his death, who wants to trade the life of Mike's daughter Lily in exchange for Eddie taking over Mike's body in the real world. Mike makes this deal, but delays long enough for Marla to smother Mike. The death of Mike's body means Eddie is now trapped forever, though so is Mike. This likely means Eddie can't manifest as the Tooth Fairy either, which is very good for the survivors.
