Despite being two years old, Among Us has exploded in popularity recently, with dozens of streamers and content creators playing with friends for their channel. This multiplayer party game follows a similar formula as Mafia or Town of Salem; players are randomly assigned a team, either Crewmate or Impostor, and are let loose on a base, inside Headquarters, or on a spaceship where they are asked to perform maintenance tasks. The Impostors attempt to sabotage and murder the Crewmates until their number equals that of the Impostors, while the Crewmates try to complete tasks and find out who the Impostors are before they themselves are murdered. The Impostors must skillfully lie to their friends to ensure a victory. The Crewmates must find and report dead bodies and collaborate and vote to kick the ones they believe are Impostors out of the crew.

Players may want to change their in-game name to further disguise their identity and make it easier to play as an Impostor, or just for fun. Players choose their name when they begin, and they keep that name for every round. They may have incorrectly assumed this was permanent because there is no indication the display name box is editable. However, it is always possible to change names prior to a new round. Here's how players can easily change their name in Among Us.

How to Change Your Name in Among Us

The Start Menu for Among Us

When players first start the game on PC, they will need to open the Online menu. Prior to starting a round, players should click on the box at the top of the screen where their name is displayed. This will allow the player to edit the text field and change their name, both for the next match they play and any subsequent matches until they choose to change it again. There is no limit on the number of times a player may change their in-game identity.

On mobile, the process is nearly identical. When players open the game on their device, they will need to select Online, just like PC users. They will then click on the box above Host and change Enter Name to the name they wish to use during the round.

This feature will only work prior to starting or after completing a match. Players are not able to change their name once the round has begun.

Some players use aliases to make it more difficult for their friends to figure out who's who, which is especially useful if some players just aren't very good at lying. Other groups have used this feature to change the names of everyone in the round to a color, but notably a color that does not match the actual color of their character. This can get confusing and lead to more chaos and fun.
