The manga Chainsaw Man by Tatsuki Fujimoto is known for its over-the-top gore, action scenes, and nightmarish villains but fans often forget the multifaceted and horrifying worldbuilding that Chainsaw Man’s story is built on. There are many small details woven throughout the story that supplement the main plot, one of which may hint at the Chainsaw Devil inadvertently stopping World War 3. This stunning revelation comes at the hands of Makima when she reveals one of the most jaw-dropping pieces of lore in the series.
In chapter 84 of Chainsaw Man, Makima reveals the greatest secret behind the Chainsaw Devil. Known as the “Hero of Hell,” Chainsaw Man is a devil feared by all other devils. When a devil cries out for aid in the depths of hell, Chainsaw Man will appear and tear both oppressor and victim apart. Though the haunting sound of cycling metal severing flesh is bad enough, this is not the true reason devils fear Chainsaw Man, as Makima soon notes. The real reason Chainsaw Man is held in such high reverence is that any devil eaten by Chainsaw Man will be erased from the past, present, and future.
In addition to this massive reveal, Makima goes on to list the names Chainsaw Man has erased from history. Among this list are nuclear weapons, the eruption of mount vio, Zoa, AIDS, World War 2, Nazis, and Anolon Syndrome. Beyond that, Chainsaw Man is also said to have destroyed some metaphysical concepts entirely such as humanity’s sixth sense, a star that broke the minds of children, and four other fates besides death at the end of life. In doing so, these concepts have all been collectively erased from the human conscience, altering the very fabric of reality with serious implications for humanity’s timeline of events. Each of these concepts that Chainsaw Man has erased also had a devil attached to them which means that by eating the World War 2 and Nazi devil, Chainsaw Man effectively prevented any possibility of World War 3.
After the big reveal of Nazis and World War 2 being erased from history, other pieces of information previously revealed in the story begin to make much more sense. For example, Russia is instead referred to as the Soviet Union or the USSR in the world of Chainsaw Man. This is because Chainsaw Man effectively prevented the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union through the erasure of Nazis and World War 2. Additionally, Chainsaw Man completely erased nuclear weapons off the face of the Earth, further staving off a potentially disastrous nuclear war.
There are several wild implications when it comes to Chainsaw Man’s existence-erasure power. Aside from erasing massive historical events like World War 2, anything that would happen because of those events is also undone. Though the finer details are still contentious at best, Chainsaw Man has undoubtedly had an unthinkable impact on the growth and evolution of humanity within just the past century of his battles.
