Bryan Andrews, the director of Disney+'s upcoming animated MCU series Marvel's What If...?, recently discussed Chadwick Boseman's enthusiasm about joining the show. What If...? is set to be Marvel Studios' first venture into animation since the studio initially launched over a decade ago. The show will feature a variety of alternate realities within the MCU's multiverse, with many actors from the mainline films reprising their roles in animated form. However, due to various reasons, a handful of MCU stars were unable to join and had to be recast.

Boseman was fortunately among those actors who signed on to reprise his role in What If...? prior to his passing. Although Avengers: Endgame marked Boseman's final live-action performance as T'challa (a.k.a. the Black Panther), fans will have a chance to see him in animated form one final time in the series. Thanks to the creative nature of the show's premise, Boseman's last hurrah as T'challa will likely be a memorable one.

Director Bryan Andrews sat down with Screen Rant to talk about Boseman's involvement with the show. According to Andrews, Boseman "was really excited about this version of T'Challa," and the actor "was one of the first actors that actually responded" when asked about joining the cast of What If...?. Check out the director's full comments below:

We were just glad that we got him. He was one of the first actors that actually responded and was like, "Yeah, yeah! I'm gonna do this with you guys. This is great." He was really excited about this version of T'Challa, because he got to be a little bit goofy and got to be a little bit funny. He didn't have the mantle of the king, so it was a different way for him to put his stamp on T'Challa, Black Panther, etc. It gives the audience another version.

And it's amazing because he knew what he was going through, and he knew what was happening. And this was something that he wanted to help bring into the world. To me, that speaks volumes, because he felt it was important. It's T'Challa. We love T'Challa, we love Black Panther, but we also love Chadwick Boseman. And just being able to work with him in such a small capacity was epic. He's gold, and the guy's got talent days. It was just so amazing, just seeing him work, having a front row seat to that and helping him bring this to life. It was great.

Andrews also says that the show's alternate take on T'challa allowed the late actor "to be a little bit goofy and [...] a little bit funny" compared to the character's more stoic personality as the King of Wakanda in the main films. The trailers for the series have also teased a more lighthearted take on T'challa, who will adopt the mantle of Star-Lord in the show (an alias usually held by Chris Pratt's Peter Quill in the Guardians of the Galaxy films). Apart from Star-Lord T'challa however, it's not yet confirmed whether other variants of Boseman's character will appear.

During his tenure as the Black Panther, Boseman was highly involved in crafting the culture and lore of the MCU's iteration of Wakanda. He ensured that the Wakandan accent and language were authentic to the African cultures they were inspired by, collaborating with Black Panther director, Ryan Coogler, to refine subtle details that general audiences might never have even noticed unprompted. The actor clearly understood that Wakanda represented something larger for Black communities across the globe, rather than being just another generic comic book locale. With Marvel's What If...? just around the corner, it will be bittersweet to see Boseman's final outing in the role of T'challa.
