Is A Certain Magical Index season 4 happening or has the anime series been cancelled? Based on Kazuma Kamachi’s light novels of the same name, A Certain Magical Index (AKA Toaru Majutsu No Index) is a three-season anime series produced by Japanese studio J.C. Staff. A Certain Magical Index is set in a world where supernatural powers are commonplace and follows protagonist Touma Kamijou – a student living in a technologically advanced city-state named Academy City whose power is the ability to negate other peoples’ powers.

Touma’s life changes when he befriends an English nun named Index whose mind has been implanted with the contents of forbidden magical grimoires and is on the run from a magic society that covets her knowledge. The first season of A Certain Magical Index was released between 2008 and 2009 and covered volumes 1 through 6 of Kazuma Kamachi’s light novel series.

A second season of the anime swiftly followed in 2010 and adapted the seventh through thirteenth volumes, but viewers were left waiting the best part of a decade before A Certain Magical Index season 3 finally arrived in 2018 and covered the final nine volumes of the light novel series. With no more volumes of Kazuma Kamachi’s original series left to adapt, can fans expect A Certain Magical Index season 4 anytime soon? Here’s what we know about the current status of the series.

A Certain Magical Index Season 4 Isn’t Confirmed

A Certain Magical Index

J.C. Staff has yet to confirm whether or not A Certain Magical Index season 4 is in the works. There was, however, a lengthy gap of almost a decade between the release of the second and third seasons of the anime, so the lack of confirmation as of yet doesn’t necessarily mean the series is done.

The first three seasons of A Certain Magical Index may have covered all volumes of Kazuma Kamachi’s original light novels, but there’s still plenty of related media ripe for adaptation. Kamachi has since penned a 23 volume sequel series titled New Testament: A Certain Magical Index and recently began publishing a third series named Genesis Testament: A Certain Magical Index – all of which J.C. Staff could adapt into further seasons of its anime series.

There Are Other Anime Titles In The Certain Magical Index Franchise

While viewers wait for confirmation of A Certain Magical Index season 4, there are plenty more related anime titles to enjoy in the meantime. The franchise currently includes a feature-length anime film titled A Certain Magical Index: The Movie – The Miracle Of Endymion which was released in 2013 and two further anime series – A Certain Scientific Railgun and A Certain Scientific Accelerator – which are based on Kamachi’s spinoff manga of the same names.
