An industrious viewer of the heavily-derided film Cats has spotted a cat butthole that the film’s VFX editor failed to remove. The Cats Broadway musical was beloved by fans for decades, but the same can't be said for the recent film adaptation. Tom Hooper's troubled adaptation of the acclaimed musical arrived in theatres this past winter to terrible reviews.

In what has been ranked as one of the biggest box office flops of all time, expectations for Cats were initially high, with cast member Jason Derulo even stating that he thought the film would change the world. Adapted from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s world-renowned stage production of the same name, the film was thought to be in excellent hands when it was first revealed that Oscar-winning director of The King’s Speech, Tom Hooper, was tasked with bringing it to life on the big screen. But things rapidly went south for the film after the first trailer dropped, prompting many to criticize it for its use of CGI to replicate fur on the characters. Adjustments were made, and even a rumored “butthole cut” was revealed to be very real indeed, after VFX editors discovered that the digital fur made the characters look as though their cat private parts were on display. Each butthole was reportedly painstakingly wiped from the film’s final cut, resulting in hours of work.

Unfortunately for the team behind Cats, at least one butthole appears to have survived the VFX purge. Twitter user That Girl Vench has pointed out the mistake, which arrives at the film’s 1:35:14 mark. Judging from the image provided below, it does indeed appear that this particular butthole survived, which begs the question: are there more? The error will possibly encourage other viewers to take up the search, but for now, the sole confirmed surviving butthole can be seen below:

Initial efforts to remove the buttholes caused a significant amount of backlash from some crew members shortly after the mistake was identified. Reports surfaced that the buttholes were a completely unintentional byproduct of the CGI used on the cats. What’s more, only one VFX editor was apparently assigned to the massive task of ridding the film of its buttholes. And to make matters even worse, members of the VFX crew allege that Hooper was horrendous throughout the entire process, verbally abusing the staff and constantly pushing for them to work faster. Whether or not there is any truth to these allegations remains unknown, but if they do happen to be true, it could explain why a mistake such as the one That Girl Vench has discovered still remains in the film’s theatrical cut.

It remains to be seen whether or not Universal will take action on this issue, but at this point, the damage is done. Cats will never be the hit that Hooper, the cast, or Universal had expected it to be. True, this most recent revelation could be seen as an embarrassment for the production, but again – that ship has long since sailed. For most people, the drubbing that Cats received upon its release has likely faded from memory, but for those directly involved in the production, forgetting is sure to have its fair share of challenges. Unfortunately, that’s just part of the risk of filmmaking.
