The July summer update of Animal Crossing: New Horizons introduced a group of deep-sea creatures players can capture, collect, and sell, including the Gigas Giant Clam. This creature is among the largest in the new group and is worth the most bells per creature of all. Huge, fast, and worth a whopping 15,000 bells each, players will want to find and capture the Gigas Giant Clam as often as possible.

Players will notice a huge shadow in the water when a Gigas Giant Clam is nearby. They'll need to equip a Wet Suit and dive for it. However, they'll want to be careful not to approach too quickly and scare it off. Like other fast sea creatures, the technique for catching it may take a player some time (and a few lost clams) to perfect. Here's how to find and catch the Gigas Giant Clam in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Like fish and other sea creatures, players have a better chance to find the Gigas Giant Clam during certain times of the year. Players in the Northern hemisphere will be able to find it between July and September this year. Next year and each year after, it should be available from May until September.

The Gigas Giant Clam can be found all day. Players will start to recognize it by its huge shadow and long lunges when it moves. It is the largest of the deep-sea creatures, making it somewhat easier to spot than the others. It can sometimes be mistaken for a creature with a large shadow and quick movements, like the Snow Crab, however.

When players think they've seen it, they will want to jump into the water. As with other sea creatures, players will see bubbles nearby.

How to Catch the Gigas Giant Clam in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

A player swims toward the shadow of a sea creature to dive in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Many players will initially make the mistake of diving for a fast creature and trying to chase after it. Instead, they will want to approach a fast creature, like the Gigas Giant Clam, as slowly as the game allows, the same way they would approach a skittish bug. To do this, move using only the analog stick, and do not press any other buttons.

Players should get as close to the bubbles as possible. Then, they will need to press Y to dive down close to the huge shadow. This will prevent it from swimming away and limit the need for a player to chase after it. When the player resurfaces, they should have caught the Gigas Giant Clam.

Some players have also experienced success chasing after the Gigas Giant Clam and cornering it near a fence or other barrier, though they will need to swim fast and keep pushing it toward such an obstacle. Players are likely to lose a few using this method, so they should be careful.

After donating one to the museum, players should always keep an eye out for large shadows and dive for Gigas Clams as often as possible to earn a hefty sum of bells.
