Netflix's Castlevania recently debuted its third season, and here's what fans can expect from the newest set of episodes. The animated series is an embellished adaptation of the story of the Castlevania franchise, specifically Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse, which sees Dracula carving a bloody path across Europe as Trevor Belmont teams up with one of three possible sidekick characters unlockable within the game. Despite the first season of the series being released in 2017, writer Warren Ellis has been working on adapting the game since 2007, initially intending to tell the story as a trilogy of animated straight-to-DVD releases.

The first season follows two storylines happening concurrently. The first is the story of Vlad Dracula Tepes, an ancient vampire who decides to wage war on humanity in 1475 after his wife is burned at the stake by the Church of God. The second follows Trevor Belmont, a member of the long-disgraced Belmont monster-hunting family, as he incidentally forms an alliance with a young sorceress named Sypha Belnades and Dracula's dhampir son Alucard. The three vow to defeat Dracula, which they do in the second season after the vampire lord's forces turn against him.

Now that season three has released and quickly become one of Netflix's most watched programs, here is everything that fans need to know before returning to the series.

Castlevania Season 3 Renewal

After the massive success of the first two seasons of Castlevania, it was generally expected that Netflix would renew it for a third season pretty quickly. After all, Netflix renewed the show for a second season the same day it released, on July 17, 2017. Indeed, the streaming giant confirmed that the show had been renewed for a third season on October 31, 2018, just a week after the second season premiered.

Castlevania Season 3 Release Date Info

After confirming the renewal for a third season, Netflix remained suspiciously secretive about the project, not announcing a release date right off the bat. However, that changed on February 14 of this year, when the streaming service released the first trailer for the newest season. Alongside teases of more ruthless vampires and wonderfully animated fight sequences, the trailer also confirmed that the third season would be released on March 5, 2020. The expansion of the series from eight episodes to ten weighed heavily on writer Warren Ellis's sanity, who discussed in interviews how he "went a bit mad kind of testing the boundaries of the thing."

The second season of the series ends with the death of Dracula at the hands of his son, Trevor Belmont, and Sypha Belnades, who finally defeat him after tethering his moving castle above the remains of the Belmont estate. However, they still have major threats left to face, as Dracula's two Forgemasters are still alive. One of them, Isaac, seems to be amassing an army, while Hector is imprisoned and chained at the hands of the vampire mistress Carmilla, who was last seen betraying Dracula and his forces after laying siege to Braila.

The trailer seems to hint at Carmilla using Hector's skill as a Forgemaster to build an army of her own, which she plans to use in an effort to imprison humanity as livestock. There are also some action shots that seemingly take place in Asia, which suggest that one or more of our main heroes will be traveling outside of Europe. Whatever the story, it seems that the trio of heroes will have an entirely new host of concerns after killing Dracula, and season 3 of Castlevania promises to be just as exciting as the first two.
