Hulu's Castle Rock Trailer Reveals Summer Premiere Date

Hulu's newest Castle Rock trailer reveals a summer release date for the spooky series from Stephen King and J.J. Abrams. Starting with 1979's The Dead Zone, the fictional town of Castle Rock has provided the setting for a number of Stephen King horror novels. King's Cujo, The Dark Half and Needful Things all take place in the town, as does his short story The Body, which served as the basis for the classic film Stand By Me.

Now, the mythology of Castle Rock gets a deeper treatment thanks to Hulu's horror series, produced by J.J. Abrams. Castle Rock centers on Henry Deaver (Andre Holland), an attorney who returns to the haunted Maine town to represent a prisoner (played by IT actor Bill Skarsgård) locked up in King's favorite fictional prison, Shawshank. As you would expect from a series based on King's works, creepy things quickly start happening.

In a new trailer for Castle Rock, Hulu teases the haunted happenings in the town with a tragic and mysterious past. Thanks to the trailer, we've also learned the series' premiere date. Castle Rock debuts on Hulu on July 25th, 2018. See the clip above.

Castle Rock is not based on any specific King story, but weaves a new tale filled with references to multiple King works. The most direct connection with the previously established Castle Rock mythology is the character of Alan Pangborn, played in the new series by Scott Glenn. King fans will remember Pangborn as the sheriff from both The Dark Half and Needful Things. And of course there's also the Shawshank Prison angle, which loosely connects Castle Rock with the beloved movie The Shawshank Redemption. No doubt the series will feature lots of other easter eggs for King devotees to pick out.

The new trailer doesn't add very much to what we've seen in previous teasers. The voiceover in the new clip does however hint at the backstory of the town, which has always been a place where bad things happen. How did Castle Rock end up cursed? Nobody knows (but it could have been those darn Puritans). The plan for Castle Rock, should it continue beyond season 1, is to continue exploring the town and its ages-old case of very bad karma through the eyes of different characters.

Castle Rock also stars Chosen Jacobs, who of course played Mike Hanlon in last year's blockbuster King adaptation IT. The cast also includes Melanie Lynskey, Jane Levy, Sissy Spacek and Terry O'Quinn.
