Renée Zellweger Opens Shocking 'Case 39' Trailer

Case 39 Trailer

Case 39 has been in production since 2006, having faced numerous delays and a massive Halloween-day studio fire in Vancouver. However, Paramount Pictures has just released a new Case 39 trailer, increasing the likelihood of the film making it to theaters on October 1st - the latest in a long line of release dates.

Case 39 was directed by Christian Alvart and stars Renée Zellweger, Bradley Cooper, Ian McShane, and go-to creepy child actress Jodelle Ferland (Silent Hill). The film will kick-off the annual Halloween box-office ahead of other jump-out-of-your-seat productions such as Paranormal Activity 2 and Saw 3D.

In case you haven't been following the film, through it's four year production:

"In CASE 39, family services social worker Emily Jenkins (Renée Zellweger) thinks she has seen it all... until she meets 10-year old Lilith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland) and the child's cruel and dangerous parents.  Her worst fears are confirmed when the parents try to harm Lily, their only daughter.  Frightened for her life, Emily enlists the help of Detective Mike Barron (Ian McShane) and takes Lily in while she continues the search for the perfect foster family.  Just as it seems as though Lily is on her way to a more loving home, under the guidance of Emily and psychiatrist (Bradley Cooper), dark forces surrounding this young girl come to light and, little do they know, their attempts to protect her will only bring on greater horror…"

The trailer is a recut version of an earlier Case 39 trailer from late 2009:

A lot of people have written-off Case 39, and the numerous delays are certainly hard to overlook but the film has managed to gross close to $15 million overseas. While Paramount hasn't disclosed the Case 39 budget, it couldn't have been too costly - even with a solid amount of star power and high production values. Given what we can see in the trailer as well as its release window, it could do well - with a decent possibility of wooing scary movie fans and early Halloween horror moviegoers alike.

Case 39 Onesheet

Case 39 has traversed a rough road to American cinemas. In addition to numerous production delays, mostly negative critical reception overseas, the Spanish version of the film was leaked to torrent sites.  The jury is definitely still out on Case 39. Critics overseas were not particularly kind to the production.

An early Halloween season release is about the film's best shot, as audiences aren't looking for Oscar-worthy performances or emotional character journeys - they're looking to hover for two hours on the edge of their seats.

Will Case 39 deliver? We'll know when it opens in US theaters on October 1st.
