Many lines from this movie have been etched in the minds of audiences— even if people don't always get them quite right. Some quotes from Casablanca are truly some of the most romantic and heartwarming quotes ever spoken in a film or otherwise.

"Play It Once, Sam. For Old Time's Sake."

Rick, Ilsa, and Sam in Casablanca

Piano player Sam's rendition of "As Time Goes By" has become one of those songs that will forever be associated with love, heartbreak, and romance. And it is all thanks to its being used in Casablanca.

The favorite of Rick and Ilsa, they call upon Sam on different occasions to play this song for them. It reminds them of their time in Paris, when they were together and in love. It's worth noting that "Play it again, Sam" is never actually spoken in the film, a iconic example of The Mandela Effect.

"I Remember Every Detail. The Germans Wore Gray, You Wore Blue."

When Ilsa walks into Rick's cafe, it is a shock for both of them to meet each other after so long. When Rick sits down at their table with Victor Lazlo and Captain Renault, they talk about the last time they had seen each other. Rick remembers the details exactly, and he hasn't forgotten anything.

This goes to show how much she had meant to him, and how much their time together had meant to him. He even remembers the color of the dress she wore the last time he had seen her.

"With The Whole World Crumbling, We Pick This Time To Fall In Love."

The love story between Rick and Ilsa is set in Paris in 1940. World War II was in full swing and the world as they knew it was changing at a rapid pace. It was then that Germany was invading Paris, so this line by Ilsa refers to the difficult period of history in which they ended up falling in love.

It is an extremely romantic line because it goes to show how even when the whole world crumbling, people cannot stop themselves from falling in love and doing things for love.

"Kiss Me As If It Were The Last Time."

Rick and Ilsa in Casablanca

When they hear about the incoming German invasion, the two lovers in Paris consider various plans to escape. They agree to leave on the train the next day and Rick fantasizes about marrying Ilsa sooner rather than later.

Ilsa already seems to have heard the news about Laszlo at this point because she seems to be going through some turbulent emotions. She is very much in love with Rick and so the prospect of leaving him was heartbreaking.

"If You Knew How Much I Loved You, How Much I Still Love You..."

Casablanca Ending

Rick refuses to give Ilsa the transit papers that will secure their escape from Casablanca. He seems to still be extremely bitter and refuses to give into her line of reasoning. She even points a gun at him over the course of this interaction, but she obviously can't go through with it.

She quickly falls into Rick's arms and tells him how much it broke her heart when he left Paris. She tells him how she has never really stopped loving him.

"I Ran Away From You Once. I Can't Do It Again."

At this point in the film, it seems as though Rick and Ilsa's love story may just continue in Casablanca. Ilsa says that Rick should give Laszlo the transit papers but that she'd want to stay behind with Rick.

She is extremely confused because she believes that she is genuinely incapable of leaving Rick once again. So she asks Rick to make the decision for her, to make the decisions for all of them.

"...I'm Also A Human Being. Yes, I Love Her That Much."

Victor Laszlo is probably the most genuine man in this movie. A man of principles, he has suffered great pains to do the work he has been doing and he wants to continue to fight the good fight. But as Laszlo very astutely points out, he too is a person who loves another person.

When Rick refuses to give them the transit papers, Laszlo asks Rick to at least give Ilsa the opportunity to leave. Rick thinks that the fight is more important to Laszlo than Ilsa, but Laszlo sets him straight here. They are both equally important to him.

"Of All The Gin Joints In All The Towns In All The World, She Walks Into Mine."

Rick looks on sadly in Casablanca

Even if there are people who haven't seen Casablanca, they are likely to have at least heard this quote, immortalized by the amazing performance of Humphrey Bogart.

Here, a drunk Rick is at his most vulnerable. His heartbreak, that he usually covers up with dry humor, is finally made evident. He was shocked to see Ilsa after Paris, and as a result, he speaks this iconic line that has oft been repeated and played off of ever since.

"Here's Looking At You, Kid."

Another legendary line that has been etched in pop culture, with countless people probably using it without even knowing where it came from. This is a line that Rick uses multiple times throughout Casablanca to address Ilsa. Every time he pours a drink, he toasts it to Ilsa. Even at the very end of the movie, when Ilsa leaves again, Rick uses this line as part of his goodbye.
