The Daytona 500 is one of the biggest events in professional racing, so it’s no surprise that Disney-Pixar picked this year’s race to unveil the first TV spot for its upcoming film Cars 2.
The new TV spot, which zeros in on the spy story at the heart of the Cars 2 plot, offers plenty of exciting racing action as well as Pixar’s beautiful animation and trademark humor. Check out the trailer, courtesy of The Movie Box, below. If you’re unfamiliar with the plot for Cars 2, here’s the official synopsis.
“Star racecar Lightning McQueen and the incomparable tow truck Mater take their friendship to exciting new places in ‘Cars 2′ when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. Torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret spy mission, Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world. Adding to the fast-paced fun is a colorful new all-car cast that includes secret agents, menacing villains and international racing competitors.”
Over the last few months, we’ve been introduced to many of the new characters from Pixar’s Cars 2. I particularly like hearing Michael Caine’s distinguished voice as British spy car Finn McMissile. Then again, I just like hearing Michael Caine’s voice.
A lot of people consider Cars to be Pixar’s weakest film, but it still was well-received by most critics and it was a big success at the box office (as all Pixar movies have been so far). Factor in the massive merchandising around the Cars franchise, and it’s no wonder that Disney wanted to go forward with a sequel.
In true Pixar style though, it doesn’t look like Cars 2 is just a cash grab. I’m not sure I’ll shed a tear (or weep like a baby) like I did during Toy Story 3, but I’m confident Cars 2 will be another hit for the animation juggernaut.
Cars 2 rolls into theaters June 24th, 2011. What do you think of this TV spot compared to the Cars 2 teaser trailer?
