'Carrie' Remake Lead Actresses Shortlist; Director Confirmed [Updated]

Find out which two young actresses are in consideration for the titular role in the remake of 'Carrie', which is being directed by Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don't Cry).

Carrie Remake Hayley Bennett Chloe Moretz

[UPDATE: Chloe Moretz has been confirmed as the new Carrie!]

Added to the growing list of upcoming remakes and reboots is Carrie, a re-interpretation of Stephen King's psychological horror novel, which was the basis for the famous 1976 film by Brian De Palma.

Last we heard about this new Carrie was that Boys Don't Cry director Kimberly Peirce was in talks with MGM/Screen Gems to helm the project, which was written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee, Big Love, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark). Today, we have word that Pierce is indeed taking the directors chair, as well as a shortlist of young actresses who are close to snagging the role.

Vulture reports that the following actress are now being considered to play the new Carrie:

  • Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass, Dark Shadows), age 15
  • Haley Bennet (The Hole, Marley & Me), age 24

Moretz and Bennet are the frontrunners left on a list that has included names such as Dakota Fanning, Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), Lily Collins (Mirror Mirror) and The Descendants star Shailene Woodley (who is said to have already passed on an offer). I know that both Moretz and Bennet are talented - personally I'm a fan of the range Moretz has displayed in everything from Kick-Ass, to Let Me In to her hilarious reoccurring role on 30 Rock - however, neither actress feels 100% right for this role, to me.

We'll keep you updated on the Carrie remake, due out sometime in 2013.
