The 2099 Universe Continues More Than 30 Years After Its Debut

The Marvel 2099 imprint originally debuted back in 1992 as the alternate Marvel future timeline featured several new versions of popular heroes. The likes of Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, and Punisher were reimagined in the universe. The characters have stood the test of time, with Miguel O'Hara's Spider-Man being among the most iconic heroes from the 2099 timeline. The future Spider-Man recently starred in a miniseries from Marvel Comics, while Oscar Isaac voiced O'Hara in a cameo in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and will reprise the role in the upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse animated films.

In the newly revealed covers for the five-issue miniseries from Nick Bradshaw, Carnage 2099 can be seen with issue one showing off the symbiote villains' terrifying form. Spider-Man 2099: Dark Genesis writer Steve Orlando shared in a press release that Spider-Man 2099's actions will accidentally trigger the rise of Carnage 2099, as Earth-2099 will be overwhelmed by the villain.

“When we last saw Spider-Man 2099, he was decimating the black card elite and upending social order to help the neighborhood. Help everyday people. But even he didn't expect how his actions would spark an outburst of vengeance and blood -- with a monster at its head. I'm so excited to be back and to be working with Justin Mason! Together, we've got even more 2099 classics coming your way, along with new debuts, of course! Earth-2099 is set for Carnage like none it's ever seen.”

It's exciting to see a new Carnage debut in the 2099 universe, as many different Spider-Verse heroes have their own unique version of the villain to battle. However, Spider-Man 2099 seems to have gotten one of the scariest versions of the symbiote ever, as Carnage 2099 appears to be hell-bent on controlling Nueva York, making him one of Miguel O'Hara's most terrifying foes ever. Carnage 2099 debuts in Spider-Man 2099: Dark Genesis #1 by Marvel Comics, which arrives in comic book stores in May.
