Netflix is moving forward with its Carmen Sandiego animated TV series, having now added Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things fame to its voice cast (which already includes Gina Rodriguez as Carmen Sandiego) . Based on the classic series of educational computer games first released in the 1980s, Carmen Sandiego is a well known property that famously found its way to TV as a children's game show in the 1990s by way of PBS.

Initially designed and developed by American software company Brøderbund, the Carmen Sandiego franchise got its start as a tool for teaching young kids about geography. Later, the series expanded into adjacent learning fields, including history, mathematics, and English, before making its way to TV and film. Undoubtedly, those who still hold fond memories of the property might be interested in seeing just what kind of shape the recently announced Netflix animated series will take.

According to Variety, Woldfhard - familiar to most viewers as Mike Wheeler from Netflix's hit show Stranger Things - will be lending his voice to the new Carmen Sandiego animated series as Carmen's chief accomplice and friend, Player. The new series will consist of twenty twenty-two minute episodes, and will be produced by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, with a premiere date set for sometime in 2019.

Perhaps taking some inspiration from the animated series Where On Earth is Carmen Sandiego? that aired on FOX for forty episodes from 1994 to 1998, the all-new Netflix Carmen Sandiego animated series will have quite the storied legacy to live up to and follow. Anyone who played the original computer games in the 1980s or watched the 1990s children's game shows on PBS may already have some idea of what to expect when the show finally makes its way online sometime in 2019, but a whole new generation of younger viewers will need to be factored into the equation as well.

It's unlikely that the new Carmen Sandiego animated series will stray too far from its past iterations, though a new origin story will undoubtedly have to be developed to reintroduce the franchise to first-time viewers otherwise unacquainted with the iconic treasure hunter. Only time will tell how the new show continues to develop, but here's to hoping for the very best from Netflix and company in the meantime.
