This week in movie news:
A biopic about astronomer Carl Sagan is in the works; Chris Evans will star in director Marc Webb's Gifted; Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation) joins the cast of The Girl on the Train; Laura Linney will appear with Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart in Captain Sully biopic Miracle on the Hudson; Sinister 2 director Ciarán Foy will helm The Shee; and John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) joins The Circle.
Warner Bros. is developing a biopic about astronomer Carl Sagan, with his widow, Ann Druyan, among the producers. No plot details have been revealed, though Zach Dean (Deadfall) has been announced as the film's screenwriter.
Sagan was a best-selling and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and in addition to his scientific work he is also known as co-creator and host of the 1980 public television series Cosmos. That show was revamped into an Emmy-winning updated series in 2014, hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Chris Evans will star in Gifted, the next directorial project for Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man), for Fox Searchlight. Evans will star as a man trying to raise the daughter of his late sister in the film, which was written by Tom Flynn (Highboys and Lowboys).
Webb first burst onto the scene with critical darling (500) Days of Summer, another Fox Searchlight project, in 2009 before signing on to reboot the Spider-Man franchise for Sony in 2012. Gifted begins shooting this fall, though an anticipated release date has not been announced.
Rebecca Ferguson - who is currently stealing scenes alongside Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - is in negotiations to join the cast of The Girl on the Train. Directed by Tate Taylor (The Help), the film is an adaptation of the Paula Hawkins novel about a divorcee (played by Emily Blunt in the film) who witnesses a shocking event and gets wraps up in a mystery.
Ferguson will play Anna, the mistress that Blunt's character's husband left her for. It is one of three main female roles in the thriller, which was written by Erin Cressida Wilson (Men, Women & Children).
Laura Linney has joined the cast of Warner Bros.' Miracle on the Hudson, which chronicles the successful landing of a plane on the Hudson River by Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger in 2009. Tom Hanks will star as Captain Sully alongside Aaron Eckhart as his co-pilot in the Clint Eastwood film.
Linney will play Sully's wife in the film, which marks her third appearance in an Eastwood film. The actress - who most recently appears with Ian McKellen in Mr. Holmes - previously starred in Mystic River and Absolute Power in 2003 and 1997, respectively.
Ciarán Foy - director of upcoming horror sequel Sinister 2 - will reteam with Blumhouse Productions for a new thriller titled The Shee. The film centers on a troubled young woman in 1960s Ireland who must confront her dark past when she travels to a remote island.
The Shee marks the director's third feature and the second with Blumhouse. His debut film, Citadel, premiered to rave reviews at SXSW in 2012, subsequently earning the festival’s Midnighters Audience Award.
John Boyega - who stars as Finn in December's hotly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens - has joined the upcoming film adaptation of Dave Eggers' book The Circle. He will star alongside Tom Hanks and Emma Watson in the film, which was written and directed by James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now).
The film centers on a young woman (Watson) who begins working for the titular tech company, which is co-owned by a charismatic man (Hanks). Boyega plays another employee for the company, who gets involved in a relationship with Watson's character.
