Captain Marvel has added costume designer Sanja Milkovic Hays, who has almost three decades of experience on sci-fi and genre films. Though Captain Marvel was originally scheduled to fall between the two upcoming Avengers sequels, the addition of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man & the Wasp to Marvel’s slate of films means fans will still have to wait until 2019 to see the cosmic hero brought to life. That is, unless she has a cameo in Avengers: Infinity War, as has long been rumored.
Regardless of when we first meet Brie Larson’s take on Carol Danvers, the start of production for Captain Marvel is right around the corner. Until recently, we didn’t know much about the film. But with word that Samuel L. Jackson will be back as Nick Fury and the film will be set in the ’90s during the Kree-Skrull War, we finally have an idea of the scope of the film. Naturally, bringing to life the MCU of the early ’90s alongside two alien races will be a tall order. Lucky for Captain Marvel, the film looks to be in good hands in that department.
Omega Underground is reporting that Sanja Milkovic Hays has been added as the costume designer for Captain Marvel. Hays has worked on over 40 films since the late ’80s, including Star Trek Beyond, The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, Total Recall, and the entire Fast & Furious franchise. Clearly, she’s no stranger to sci-fi and action films, and has had to help design completely new worlds many times.
Hays’ résumé is actually full of even more encouraging projects. Alongside being the lead costume designer on some smaller films, her early years saw her work as an assistant costume designer on ’90s sci-fi films like Independence Day, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie, and Stargate. Later on, she tackled Blade and Star Trek: Insurgence. So not only is she well-versed in aliens and superheroes, but she shouldn’t have trouble evoking the look of a ’90s cosmic film.
With filming said to start early next year for Captain Marvel, the pieces are coming together fast for the production. Oscar-nominated production designer Andy Nicholson was added last month, bringing his experience on films like Gravity to Captain Marvel. The script for the film is also being touched-up by Tomb Raider scribe Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
As the year comes to close, the rest of the crew for Captain Marvel will start to come together. Already, the list of individuals involved points to an exciting film for Marvel. And with shooting right around the corner, it shouldn’t be too much longer until we get the first look at Larson all suited up in Captain Marvel.
