Captain Marvel concept art reveals Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) teaming up with Vers (Brie Larson) against a team of Skrulls. After Carol Danvers' arrival in the MCU was teased in the Avengers: Infinity War mid-credits scene, fans didn't have to wait that long to learn more about her thanks to the Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck project.
Set in 1995, Captain Marvel pre-dated the events of Iron Man, which kicked-off the MCU. It chronicled the early days of S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as they dealt with the unexpected arrival of Vers on Earth. With her memory wiped out following the Kree abducting her year prior, she was unaware of her past life as Carol Danvers, this is why she went by the name Vers which was derived from the text in the remaining fragment of her dog tags.
Prior to Carol learning the truth about herself, she was an ace member of the Kree team dubbed Starforce, led by Yon-Rogg. In a newly-emerged concept for Captain Marvel (via MC Direct), he and Carol work together to fend off a pack of Skrulls. Check out the image below:
This concept art is more likely for the beginning of Captain Marvel where Starforce went on a supposed rescue mission. That's the only time in the film where fans saw Carol with her headpiece gathers her hair up, giving a mohawk illusion. Marvel Studios had been secretive regarding Law's true role in Captain Marvel. His character was only described a devout Kree warrior without being named for the most part of the marketing campaign. Initially, he was rumored to play Mar-Vell - the original Captain Marvel. However tie-in merchandise spurred rumors that he might not be an ally by portraying Yon-Rogg. This gave people the idea that he would be a villain.
While Marvel Studios' twist involving Law's character wasn't as guarded as they would've liked, they did have another surprise saved for Captain Marvel. Many assumed that the Kree race will ultimately be the good guys in the narrative, but it turns out, they're not. They've been chasing the Skrulls across the galaxy when the shape-shifting aliens only wants a safe place to settle. Viewers learned this the same time Carol did which added to the people's viewing experience. With Yon-Rogg still alive in the MCU, it's curious if fans will ever see him again down the road. Perhaps with Captain Marvel 2 officially moving forward, Kevin Feige and his team can come up with an idea to incorporate him in the sequel's story.
