Female superheroes have been getting more attention in recent years with both Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel getting their own movies. One upcoming superhero movie, Black Widow, is led by the very first superheroine of the MCU.

Yet, there are different opinions on whether or not we need a sequel to Captain Marvel. Here are 5 reasons why we need a sequel to Captain Marvel, and 5 reasons we don't.

We Don't: There Was A Lot Of Backlash

It would be a lie to say that everything went smoothly with Captain Marvel. Most of the time, Marvel doesn't take many risks in the political sense, but with this movie and future installments, it seems that there will be more changes.

Of course, there were many fans who were quite upset or even angry by this new direction the studio has taken. Perhaps this could be a reason to cancel the sequel, but only time will tell if it is a good idea or not.

We Do: The First Movie Was A Success

Nevertheless, commercially speaking, the movie was a success. It got good reviews from critics but wasn't as popular with regular audiences. At the moment, Captain Marvel is in the top 30 worldwide highest-grossing movies of all time as well as being a part of the billion-dollar club.

We Don't: We Already Have Too Many Overpowered Superheroes

One of the biggest complaints about Captain Marvel is that she was powerful at the beginning of the movie and remained powerful until the end of it. Moreover, she is a character that is often referred to as "deus ex machina" - someone who shows up unexpectedly to miraculously save our heroes.

That being said, overpowered characters can still be great characters as long as they are well-written. Thor is an example of a well-developed overpowered character, as is Doctor Strange.

We Do: Captain Marvel Is One Of The Most Powerful Avengers

And then there's the other side to the matter... If the MCU will continue developing properly, we will probably see a threat much greater than Thanos (otherwise, the stakes might be not high enough to engage the audience).

Having a powerful villain means there should be powerful superheroes to oppose them. Captain Marvel could be a great addition in that sense.

We Don't: The New Phase Seems To Be Transitioning To The Small Screens

WandaVision

Speaking of MCU's future, the new phase seems to be transitioning to the small screens. Who knows, maybe in a few years we will only be seeing MCU shows on Disney+ instead of going to the cinema. As a result, making a sequel might not be the most reasonable choice for Marvel.

We Do: Carol Danvers Is A Part Of The New Phase

Because she was only introduced recently, it is logical that Carol Danvers is an integral part of the new phase. This means that she is practically bound to have a sequel.

Yet, if she gets a sequel, then other characters should also get sequels to their movies because that is the only fair way to go about it.

We Don't: Brie Larson Is Not Loved By Everyone

Captain Marvel Avengers Endgame Brie Larson

It's not just the movie itself that wasn't enjoyed by everyone - it's Brie Larson, the actress playing Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel. Such a mood among the audience could potentially negatively impact the sequel. However, maybe these claims are just overblown? Considering how well the movie did financially, maybe most people enjoy the actress.

We Do: Brie Larson Is A Good Actress

Brie Larson as Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel

Brie Larson is considered a very good actress. She has won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA for her role in 2015's Room, which is probably her most critically-acclaimed performance.

Recently, Marvel started casting some of the top actors and actresses in its movies, so Brie Larson acting in the franchise is only reasonable.

We Don't: There Are Other Female Superheroes Who Deserve The Spotlight

MCU All-Female Team Up

Black Widow will be released this year - a movie most fans have been expecting ever since the character appeared in Iron Man 2. But why did it take so long to make the dream a reality? In addition to that, there are many other female characters in the MCU who deserve the spotlight.

For example, imagine a movie about the two sisters Gamora and Nebula, or a movie about Valkyrie during the times when Odin had to fight his daughter Hela, or a movie about the Wasp, who has been around for some time now, or a movie about one of the most powerful characters in the franchise - Scarlet Witch.

We Do: It's A Female-Led Superhero Movie

What could be better than girl power? The Wasp was the first female Marvel superhero to get her name in a film title, Captain Marvel was the first woman in Marvel to get a solo movie, and Black Widow is one of the original Avengers, she's earned her solo movie.

So, Captain Marvel getting a sequel would make another first for the franchise and help promote the importance of female superheroes.
