Carol Danvers's adventures have been extremely dramatic as of late. Captain Marvel has been forced to kill Avengers clones in an effort to trick and appease Vox Supreme. However, she'll need the Avengers' powers and weapons more than ever to take him down - including Thor's hammer, Mjolnir.
Vox Supreme, who was responsible for nearly wiping out all of the Inhumans, tasked Carol with killing the Avengers, otherwise, he planned on setting off bombs inside Kree children living in refugee camps. Carol outsmarted Vox, bringing all the Avengers on her kill list to a pocket dimension while killing clones of her fellow heroes. Unfortunately, Vox's plan didn't end there, as he intended on absorbing all of the Avengers' powers for himself via a supermachine.
In Captain Marvel #16 (#150 in legacy numbers) by Kelly Thompson, Lee Garbett, Tamra Bonvillain, and VC's Clayton Cowles, Carol visits the pocket dimension to plan how to deal with Vox and his explosives with her fellow Avengers. After the team agrees on a method of keeping Vox distracted, Captain Marvel gets to work. She breaks free of Vox's machine and fights with him. After getting blasted by a dose of the power absorption goo by Vox, Carol turns into a disgusting Avengers mutation. Carol calls for Mjolnir which travels to Carol just in time before Vox can detonate his bombs. She knocks Vox out before using her powers to burn off the rest of the Avengers mutations/powers.
Captain Marvel was worthy... temporarily. After absorbing the clone Avengers and their powers, she became worthy via the Thor clone. As soon as she decided to burn off the mutation, she was no longer able to wield Mjolnir. It's a simple, yet brilliant explanation for Carol's sudden worthiness. While Captain Marvel had to feel great holding the hammer as she says "heh, that damn hammer," it couldn't have felt good to be stuck in the mutative state. Becoming deformed and not being able to stop puking isn't exactly a fair trade-off.
After making it to her apartment after the prolonged battle against Vox, Carol is ready to "sleep for a thousand years." However, Chewie, her Flerken cat, has food on the mind. He jumps on her and begs for food before she can get some rest. It's a great ending to a pretty bananas story. In the span of the arc, Captain Marvel had to kill all of the Avengers (clones) and was forced to mutate into them all at once. If anyone deserves the sleep, she does.
