After Captain Marvel murdered Thor it seemed her days of being a superhero were over. But the truth about Carol's mission to kill the Avengers is far more complicated. And clearly noble, since she'll be worthy of both Thor's hammer Mjolnir - and Captain America's shield, too.

That stunning revelation comes courtesy of Marvel's official solicitations for March 2020, with Captain Marvel #16 bringing an end to Kelly Thompson and Lee Garbett's "Last Avenger" story. It's that story that gave Captain Marvel a dark new costume and mission, giving her a single day to kill every member of the Avengers. But the plot twisted when Captain Marvel's fight with Iron Man ended in a truce, and Carol explaining she was only playing the part, slowly assembling her own plan to defeat the villain at the end of her leash. Now that the cover art has been revealed, it seems that plan involves doing her best impression of Chris Evans in Avengers: Endgame's final battle.

The artwork from Mark Brooks depicts Carol having put her fights with Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Panther, and She-Hulk to good use. Wielding Mjolnir in one hand, the truth of her heroism is beyond question (even deceiving her friends for their own sake). The shield of Captain America, and the Iron Man Gauntlet on her arm show she is gathering her teammates' strength. All for what looks to be one heck of a showdown.

The cover art and plot synopsis don't offer any explanation of what advantages Panther or She-Hulk offer. But since this fight is being framed as Carol harnessing the power of the Avengers, we can only assume Carol will get her own Wakanda upgrade like Captain America's suit, or a weaponized form of She-Hulk's gamma blast. But to know for sure, we'll have to wait until March 2020.
