A reported synopsis for The Marvels seemingly clears up some of the mystery surrounding Carol Danvers' adventures after her standalone film. Primarily set in 1995, 2019's Captain Marvel chronicled Danvers' accidental return to Earth after being abducted by the Kree and brainwashed into believing she was one of their own. By the end of the movie, she reclaimed her identity and left Earth to help the Skrulls find a new home, after which she relocated to space. Brie Larson's Captain Marvel returned in Avengers: Endgame, which was set in the present day. However, her role was somewhat small, and her journey up until that point was only briefly hinted at.

In the film, the hero stated she was in charge of helping different planets in need, but she didn't elaborate on that, leaving her time away from Earth a mystery. Carol Danvers will now return in The Marvels. Directed by Nia DaCosta (2021's Candyman), the film will see Carol team up with Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani). Danvers' decades-long journey between Captain Marvel's 1995 setting and Endgame has become one of the MCU's most enticing question marks. However, it seems The Marvels will at least offer a better picture of what the superhero was up to during the period she spent off-world.

The Marvels Synopsis Hints At What Captain Marvel Has Been Doing Since 1995

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in the MCU

In Captain Marvel, after defeating Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), Carol tells the villain she will be going to Hala to end the Kree-Skrull war and go after the Kree's ruler, the Supreme Intelligence. Though that appeared to be a left-behind plot point as a result of the movie's period setting, it seems Danvers' crusade will come into play in The Marvels. A reported synopsis for The Marvels surfaced online, providing an in-depth description of what its three heroes will be dealing with. It also offered background on Carol Danvers' story after Captain Marvel, stating she had "reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence."

The synopsis further explained that Carol's attack on the Kree led to her looking after a "destabilized universe." This seemingly explains why she's had to protect so many planets on her own since the end of her standalone feature and, thus, why she's had to remain away from Earth for so long. The aftermath of Carol's crusade also sheds light on the strained relationship between her and Monica Rambeau, which was shown in WandaVision, when Rambeau became upset upon hearing Captain Marvel's name. As Nia DaCosta explained, The Marvels will explore Carol and Monica's complicated relationship:

"While Carol and Monica are having to find their relationship again after all this time apart, we have Ms. Marvel, who idolizes Carol in the way that Monica used to when she was younger. So, you have these two adults having to reconcile their relationship while this younger person is also having a relationship that mirrors the way Monica and Carol used to be together."

Will The MCU Ever Tell This Captain Marvel Story?

Captain Marvel Brie Larson as Carol Danvers VS The Kree Fleet

Despite not having been shown on screen, Carol Danvers going back to Hala and confronting the Supreme Intelligence is a major event in the MCU's history. However, it doesn't seem likely for the franchise to go back in time to explore the conflict. Marvel Studios doesn't typically focus on prequels. With the exception of Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain Marvel, and Black Widow, whose time periods were deliberately chosen to establish the next steps in its overarching storyline, the MCU tends to focus on stories set in the present. Furthermore, the saga has evolved considerably since the release of Captain Marvel.

Major events have transpired in the MCU movie timeline since 1995. Half of the universe has disappeared and returned, Earth was nearly destroyed by a Celestial, and the Multiverse is being thrown into chaos. The amount and magnitude of present-day incidents in the MCU could potentially make a story centered entirely on Carol's decades-old battle against the Supreme Intelligence inconsequential at this point. Captain Marvel's conflict with the Kree is fascinating, but Marvel Studios may understandably opt to explore it exclusively through flashbacks and to treat it as a setup for modern stories, much like The Marvels seems to be doing.
