Warning! Potential spoilers for the Captain Marvel ongoing series below!

Captain Marvel is getting a brand new costume. Carol Danvers has been the subject of a number of redesigns with some being more successful than others. However, Captain Marvel writer Kelly Thompson teamed-up with Marco Checchetto for a new look for Carol - and it's quite different than what longtime readers might be used to.

Carol Danvers has had quite the selection of costume changes over the years. Originally, she wore an overly sexualized look as Ms. Marvel that even Marvel admitted was stupid. That look was later updated but still didn't do the character justice. She got her most classic look in the 70s, which was her signature costume until Jamie McKelvie redesigned the character's costume in 2012 as she took the character took on the Captain Marvel mantle. Without question, McKelvie's colorful and bold design is the best look she's ever had. In Thompson's arc, Carol has already had a few costume changes and in an upcoming story, she'll get a magical new look.

SyFy WIRE exclusively spoke with Thompson, who revealed Carol Danvers' next costume will be like nothing she's worn before. Beginning in Captain Marvel #28 by Thompson and Jacopo Camagni, Captain Marvel will sport a new magical look designed by Checchetto. Carol's costume is darker, and she sports a hooded cape. Thompson told SyFy WIRE that the costume will spin out of events of the current "The New World" arc, which sees Captain Marvel is stuck in a dark future.

Thompson said that Carol will be left feeling vulnerable to magic after the latest arc, which she's going to address head-on. Thompson further teased that the current arc will see Captain Marvel try to save the lives of billions and prevent the future apocalypse, even if the odds are stacked up against her. Learning how to defend and use magic seems like a good start in attempting to save the world. But Thompson warns, "Oh. This will not go well." She continued, "Literally nobody wants Carol to know magic. [Laughs]."

Captain Marvel is one of the strongest - if not the strongest - Marvel Comics superheroes. It seems her glimpse into a dark future makes her realize that learning magic is the only way to prevent futures like it from happening. Although considering the volatility of using spells, it won't be an easy transition for the Marvel powerhouse. Regardless, it's a slick costume for Carol Danvers. Captain Marvel #28 releases in April.
