UPDATE: It looks like Captain Marvel's trailer will release September 18.

When will the first trailer for Captain Marvel release? Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Marvel Studios movie is due to release in March next year, but aside the post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War the marketing push for Carol Danvers' solo movie has yet to begin. It's normal for a studio to begin the marketing push for a blockbuster some seven or eight months before theatrical release, and with the film well into production, that means MCU fans are expecting a Captain Marvel trailer to drop fairly soon.

There's a lot of excitement about next year's Captain Marvel. It's the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to star a female superhero, with Marvel hoping Brie Larson's titular hero will be as successful as DC's Wonder Woman. Kevin Feige gave a sense of just how important Captain Marvel will be when he noted that she's "as powerful a character as we've ever put in a movie." The character is then expected to become a key player in next year's Avengers 4, setting her up for a major role in the post-Phase 3 MCU.

So, about that Captain Marvel trailer. The first Black Panther trailer released on June 9, 2017 ahead of a February 2018 release. Captain Marvel is due to release in March next year, so we've already passed a similar window to Black Panther. Kevin Feige said that the trailer was a "few months" away in June, which means it could be any time now. A September release makes sense, although there's no clear movie to pair a release with.

It's important to remember that this first trailer will just be a "teaser", meaning it'll be more a taste of the film rather than a proper plot reveal. Nevertheless, Marvel doesn't tend to release even a teaser trailer until they're happy with it, meaning there's surely going to be some visual spectacle.

The Captain Marvel trailer silence is really part of a bigger marketing push by Marvel. The gap between Ant-Man & the Wasp and the next movie is the longest in years, and the future after next year's Spider-Man: Far From Home is a closely guarded secret. This is obviously an effort to let the impact of Avengers: Infinity War sink in. Now it's out on Blu-ray, though, it's about time from a little something more...
