With Captain Marvel set to hit the big screen in March 2019, a new photo from the movie showing lead Brie Larson and co-star Jude Law adds fuel to the fire for one of the biggest remaining mysteries: exactly who will Law be playing and what are his intentions? Larson’s Captain Marvel has yet to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which leaves her storyline and many of the players involved unknown beyond what might be predicted from various comic books.

Thanks to a pair of Captain Marvel trailers as well as various interviews and teasers from the cast and crew, there are several certainties we already know about Captain Marvel. First and foremost, her debut film isn’t going to be a traditional origin story, but will rather start off with Carol Danvers, aka. Captain Marvel, already an acting member of the Kree intergalactic military unit called Starforce. Second, the film will be set in the 1990s and involve a war with the shape-shifting alien race known as Skrulls. We also know Danvers is a former human fighter pilot who gained cosmic powers and Kree heritage thanks to an “accident,” which leads to challenges with memory recall. But most importantly, we know she will be the most powerful being in the MCU to date and she spends time fighting alongside Law’s mysterious character - who is still officially unnamed.

In an exclusive photo from the movie shared by Empire, Larson’s and Law’s characters grasp hands in a strong, familiar embrace that will add to the speculation surrounding their relationship. It is a clear collaborative moment between the two, the type that has led many to surmise Law will be playing Doctor Walter Lawson, aka. Mar-Vell - Carol Danvers’ mentor. Law, however, will neither confirm nor deny that he is playing Mar-Vell, only teasing that his character is a “devout” Kree warrior and commander.

The secrecy surrounding Law’s character and the ambiguity of the flashback sequences in the trailers have some convinced he won’t be playing Mar-Vell at all, but rather Mar-Vell’s greatest nemesis: Yon-Rogg. Yon-Rogg is another Kree warrior who has served as a villain in various storylines, and his portrayal by Law could possibly help explain one of Captain Marvel’s only weaknesses - her memories. It seems quite clear at this point, however, that the reveal will only come upon the film’s release, as the studio has even gone so far as to brand Law’s Captain Marvel Funko Pop! figurine as simply “Star Commander.”

The photo itself reveals little in the way of plot, but it helps create a stronger relationship between the characters in the mind of the viewer. One can’t help but wonder if this is being done purposely by Marvel only to throw fans further off the scent of Law’s character’s true nature as a hidden villain.
