Captain Marvel 2 is finally on its way towards a 2022 release date, but the venture will go ahead without the directors of the first film. After Captain Marvel grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, a sequel was guaranteed despite not being included in the Phase 4 lineup presented at San Diego Comic-Con. Now, though, there's plenty of new buzz and concrete information to discuss.

Marvel's first solo female-led superhero movie was helmed by the directorial duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. While the two had mostly worked on television shows together, such as The Affair and Billions, they also collaborated on films like It's Kind of a Funny Story and Sugar. Not only did they direct Captain Marvel, they also co-wrote the screenplay along with several others.

Given the level of their involvement in such a successful project, it's quite a shock that they may not be participating as actively in its sequel. THR reports that Captain Marvel 2 will be changing hands on both the writing and directing fronts. Not only has WandaVision staff writer Megan McDonnell been chosen by Marvel to write the screenplay instead, for which she is currently in the final stage of negotiations, but Boden and Fleck will not be directing the film either.

While Marvel is hoping to find a female director for Captain Marvel 2, it at least sounds like the company didn't part on bad terms with the previous team. Boden and Fleck are apparently in talks to direct a Disney+ series - although there's no word on what the show would be about. In the meantime, details about Carol Danvers' second solo outing are scarce. But continuity with WandaVision is nearly guaranteed considering the screenwriter, as a move to the present with an adult Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) seems like a safe bet.

Directors and writers jump in and out of projects all the time, so there isn't anything to be concerned about necessarily. But the MCU has experienced a few more shake-ups than normal lately, especially with Scott Derrickson exiting Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. There's no official word on why Boden and Fleck aren't returning, whereas the phrase used in Derrickson's case was "creative differences." Perhaps there was a scheduling issue or perhaps WandaVision is the most important piece of the MCU puzzle and other movies need to accommodate it.

Whatever the reason may be in Captain Marvel 2's case, fewer names in the credits may be a good thing behind the scenes. Fans may understandably feel ill at ease with the various changes happening, but the final product will speak for itself one way or another. And while fans wait for the final verdict, they can at least take comfort in the fact that Carol Danvers will soon be here to save the day again.
