Captain Marvel directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden have voiced their support for Nia DaCosta, who will helm the upcoming sequel. Fleck and Boden successfully started Carol Danvers' story last year, introducing audiences to the hero in live-action. Captain Marvel was an exciting step forward for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the movie the first led by a solo female superhero. It was an also an undeniable success, becoming the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2019, with many praising Brie Larson's take on the character. That's why it didn't come as a surprise when Marvel confirmed Captain Marvel 2 only a few months after the first film's release.

However, the upcoming sequel will have a few changes. The script is by a different writer, Megan McDonnell, who also works on Marvel TV's WandaVision. Additionally, it was announced in January of this year that Boden and Fleck wouldn't be returning for Captain Marvel 2. Instead, as was just revealed, DaCosta will direct the sequel. She earned praise for her 2018 feature film debut Little Woods with Tessa Thompson and Lily James. However, DaCosta really entered public conversation with the Candyman sequel, which is due out this year.

Soon after the announcement about DaCosta directing Captain Marvel 2Fleck took to social media to express his excitement about the news, speaking on behalf of Boden as well. Check out his message of congratulations below:

This isn't the first time recently a new director has been brought in for a MCU sequel. In fact, around the same time it was revealed Fleck and Boden wouldn't return for Captain Marvel 2, director Scott Derrickson departed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, citing creative differences. The film will instead be helmed by Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi. Derrickson was similarly gracious at the time, calling Raimi "a great choice." Both Captain Marvel 2 and the Doctor Strange sequel release in 2022, so Raimi and DaCosta will have something else in common as well.

Though it's possible there's some disappointment on the part of Boden and Fleck over not returning for the sequel, it's nice to see their support for DaCosta. She's an exciting choice who will likely only increase the strength of the Captain Marvel franchise. Marvel has had success in the past with changing directors for subsequent films. The best example is probably Thor: Ragnarok, with director Taika Waititi breathing life into the character. From their comments, it sounds like Fleck and Boden recognize that sometimes a change like this only ensures a beloved character like Captain Marvel will be able to live on onscreen for longer.
