A screenshot of a deleted scene from 2019's Captain Marvel has surfaced, and it reveals a version of the Supreme Intelligence inspired by the character's original Marvel Comics design. The finished film cast Annette Bening in the role, but instead of appearing as an enormous green head (as in the comics), Bening's version of the character uses her shape-shifting abilities to take the physical form of the individual most respected by the person with whom she's speaking. This trick works especially well on Brie Larson's Carol Danvers, who is amnesia-stricken, and totally unaware that the form Bening has chosen is someone connected to her past.

The deleted scene is part of the Marvel Studios' Infinity Saga box set, a limited-edition collection of MCU films from Iron Man to Spider-Man: Far From Home. In addition to a whopping 23 movies, the set includes never-before-seen deleted scenes - including Captain Marvel's first appearance, which was cut from director Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron. Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, had previously teased the box set would also include deleted scenes that were "really, really bad."

MCU Cosmic shared the image of the deleted Supreme Intelligence scene. The screenshot shows Larson's Captain Marvel, with her back to the viewer, standing directly in front of a comics-accurate depiction of the artificial intelligence composed of the greatest minds of the Kree race. The unfinished effect looks more like a matte painting than a finished CGI rendering, but the design is remarkably similar to the original Jack Kirby-designed character. Incomplete effects aside, the giant green head, adorned with cables attached to something off-screen, is unmistakably inspired by the comics. It even has multiple, glowing eyes. Take a look:

It's unfortunate the design didn't end up in the version of the movie released to theaters. Comics fans always appreciate when the MCU brings a character to life directly from the pages of the books, but in a movie that was already packed with an origin story and a ton of world-building - like setting up the Kree/Skrull war - it isn't a surprise this particular scene was cut. Captain Marvel production designer Andy Nicholson said the scene "would've been a big spectacle which would've overwhelmed the main thrust of what we were doing which was talking about Carol's development and transformation into Captain Marvel."

Captain Marvel sequel is already in the works for MCU Phase 5, and has been confirmed to take place in the present day. There is a lot of time to account for since Danvers left Earth in the 90s at the end of the first film, to when she briefly returned to help defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. It's possible she will run into the Supreme Intelligence again, this time in its hideous original form, since it would be a shame to let such an impressive design go to waste. In the meantime, you can try to get your hands on a copy of the limited-edition (only 4,025 were made) Infinity Saga box set, and see the deleted scene for yourself.
