Possible Captain Marvel villain Ben Mendelsohn is having fun not answering questions about his potential involvement. Marvel Studios is enjoying the high of Thor: Ragnarok's theatrical release closing out their 2017 slate, but are still plenty busy with what else they have coming. Production is finishing up on Ant-Man & The Wasp and Untitled Avengers, while editing and marketing are ongoing with Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. Next up on their production docket, however, is their first female superhero solo movie, Captain Marvel.
Starring Brie Larson in the title role of Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel is one of the many highly anticipated projects coming from Marvel Studios in the next few years. There has not been much movement on it as it is going through the final stages of pre-production before production begins next year, but casting rumors have begun to pop up. The first pointed to Ben Mendelsohn possibly playing the leader of the Skrulls - and since that has yet to be confirmed, it is making his job incredibly difficult.
Collider spoke to Mendelsohn as he is doing press for Darkest Hour, but the actor couldn't escape the interview without being asked about the possibility of him joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He could neither confirm nor deny his involvement, only saying he loves his Mississippi Grind directors and how thrilling it would be to work with them again:
“Wow, that would be lovely. That would be really nice. But I know that Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden - I think I know how this one got started because they did Mississippi Grind obviously, and I think they’re a great choice and a really interesting choice for that film.
"Well you see a smile because I’m amused that people even bother to ask. Only because it’s one of those things, it’s sort of like being in the secret service for a moment. You can neither confirm nor deny… It would be thrilling, I’m sure.”
The news reporting cycle has put Mendelsohn in the unfortunate position where he can't actually confirm his involvement, leaving him to dodge questions from now until an official announcement is made. For his sake, we can only hope Marvel confirms it soon - assuming it works out. Considering the history Mendelsohn has with Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (the film's directors) and his continuing relationship with Disney, this seems to be a deal that will surely close.
Once he is onboard, he will be the second but far from the last co-star of Larson's, following the announcement of Samuel L. Jackson's return as Nick Fury. Rumors of Mar-Vell appearing have popped up before and there are surely several other roles that will be included as well. Mendelsohn will serve as the big bad of the film, according to previous reports, but the Skrull race is an empire and he will need more help to fight off the Kree. As more people are rumored to be involved, those individuals will have to experience the same questions that Mendelsohn is getting now. Even though Mendelsohn may not understand why people will ask him about a project he clearly he can't talk about, at least he is having fun with the questions (for now) and appears to be happy to possibly join Captain Marvel.
