Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has explained why the Captain Marvel takes place in the 1990s. When it was announced that Carol Danvers would take on the Skrulls in Captain Marvel, fans went wild from the excitement. This came along with the news that the movie wouldn't be set in the "present day" of the MCU, but would instead be set in the '90s. While this news may have excited some fans, some were also left scratching their heads as to why Captain Marvel's solo film needed to take place in the past.
As it turns out, there were a few good reasons for the setting of Captain Marvel to be in the '90s. Unfortunately, some of those reasons can't be revealed just yet because they would be potential spoilers.
After Marvel's San Diego Comic-Con 2017 panel, MTV News caught up with Feige and Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo to find out more about some of the big announcements and visuals that were shown off in Hall H. Speaking to Feige, MTV's Josh Horowitz asked a few questions about Captain Marvel:
MTV: So... time period. When was that hit upon? Was that an early part of the development process, that this would seem like a good idea?
Feige: Uh... yes. Yeah. Early, early days.
Feige: Uh, well, there is an unexplored period of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we wanted to showcase, and... almost anything else is a spoiler...
Feige: ...other than to say, the 90s would be a fun period to make a superhero movie in.
Feige went on to explain that he graduated from high school in 1991, so the thought of making a period piece that takes place in that era is a bit weird. He does say that it will be a lot of fun, however.
There are a few possible reasons that knowing more about Captain Marvel's setting could be a spoiler. It could indicate that rumors about Carol Danvers appearing in Infinity War are true and her solo film will flesh out some part of the action there. This would let her be dropped right into the action, giving fans more details about her backstory in the solo film. The 20-year time gap would allow her to head off-world (explaining her absence during the previous Avengers films) and then return in time for the fight against Thanos.
One other theory supported by the '90s setting is that Marvel is planning on doing a version of the Secret Invasion story arc in Phase 4. Setting Captain Marvel in the '90s would give the Skrulls 20 years to begin invading Earth, putting them in a prime position to attack in Phase 4.
Regardless of what spoilers might be revealed by talking too much about Captain Marvel in the '90s, it's sure to be an entertaining reveal. Captain Marvel is one of Marvel Comics' most powerful heroes, so fans should be in for a treat when she finally makes it to the big screen.
