In Marvel's Dark Ages, the Earth is set in a post-apocalyptic world thanks to the sacrifice of Doctor Strange in the never-ending battle against the Unmaker, a sentient lifeform that's laid dormant within the Earth for billions of years. After searching the universe for a solution to defeating the sentient machine, the Sorcerer Supreme opened a portal to a world without power, causing the Unmaker to fall into a deep sleep. As a result, the world entered a civilization without electricity, but not without evil forces lurking in the darkness. With Apocolypse in control of Earth's mightiest minds and searching to bring power back to the world, the remaining heroes get ready to partake in yet another impending war.
Comic artist @JSwayArt revealed his beautiful variant cover of the first Captain Marvel Monica Rambeau on Twitter with a caption that signifies the hero's future in the upcoming issue. Currently, there's no power on Earth, and superheroes are dwindling by the minute, making Monica's return a perfect source of light in a dark era. A beautiful sentiment since Monica's design is after popular Twitch streamer @Storymodebae. Monica's gold hoops and nose ring match perfectly with the streamer's well-loved style, and now with the hero returning to Earth in her classic Captain Marvel uniform, only signifies her importance in the battle against Apocolypse.
The cover art signals Monica's return to Earth as she's seen running through a cosmic field with determination on her face. The hero's choice to visit Earth now, rather than during the war with the Unmaker, is also unclear, as is whether the Sorcerer Supreme saw Monica as the true savior of Earth during his quest to defeat the world-destroying machine. After gaining her powers from a cosmic blast that resulted in her ability to control light, Monica became the second holder of the Captain Marvel name after the death of the first Captain Marvel, Mar-Vel. Over the years, Monica has fought alongside the Avengers and other superhero groups. The former Captain Marvel also became Black Panther's mightiest ally in the protection of Wakanda.
