Captain Marvel actress Gemma Chan talks about the development of her character, Minn-Erva to become a full-fledged villain. A member of the elite Kree team known as the Starforce, Doctor Minerva is a known geneticist. While the Starforce are often portrayed as bad guys in print, a good number of fans are most excited about what the future lies ahead for the character as she becomes a notable enemy of Mar-Vell (who is still unknown in the movie).
Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the upcoming Marvel Studios film will officially introduce MCU's first female headlining hero who also happens to be the strongest one in the franchise in Brie Larsons' Carol Danvers. Set in 1995, the film will incorporate the Kree-Skrull War in the narrative, effectively putting the shape-shifting extraterrestrial race as the movie's antagonist. But moving forward, Captain Marvel could see herself going up against a former ally in Chan's Minn-Erva.
During Screen Rant's visit on the set of Captain Marvel, Chan talked about what fans can expect with her version of Minn-Erva in the film and what her relationship is with Carol as the only two female members of Starforce. Being both capable at their jobs, the two are definitely engaged in an understandable rivalry, especially considering that Minn-Erva was the crowning jewel of the team before Carol's arrival changed that.
I suppose before Carol joined the team, Minn-Erva was probably kinda of the star of this Starforce team, and she was probably the favorite of the commander who is played by Jude Law. So yeah, so I suppose there's more to do with their abilities rather than affections as such. But yeah, I think there's a mutual respect, but yeah, someone else who's also very good at their job. It's kind of playful rivalry.
Given that, can their so-called "playful rivalry" turn into a serious competition that will put her at odds with Carol? Chan is tightlipped about any specifics about the trajectory of her character. Although she did say that Captain Marvel will see the beginning of an evolving dynamic between Minn-Erva and Captain Marvel.
That’s a good question. I think it's definitely a developing relationship. I'll say that, yeah.
In the MCU where one-off villains are the norm, it would be nice to see an antagonist develop in parallel with the hero building up to their ultimate face-off after a couple of movies. Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange franchise with Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) appears to be going this route and it will be interesting to see if Minn-Erva has the same the arc in the Captain Marvel trilogy. It will also be curious what will eventually drive her on the other side, but the hint of jealousy on Carol's newfound fame within the Starforce is a great way to begin her descent to the dark side.
