In the Captain Marvel trailer, we see Captain Marvel beating up an elderly woman on the train. Now, Carol Danvers doesn’t make a sport out of hitting ladies for the fun of it – she’s attacking the woman because she’s a Skrull. Skrulls are green, shape-shifting extraterrestrials from the Andromeda Galaxy that have come to infiltrate, colonize, and conquer Earth.

They will be the main antagonists of Captain Marvel and will be extremely hard to sniff out. Since these extraterrestrial beings can take the form of anything they’d like, anyone in the MCU could be a Skrull in disguise – even our beloved Avengers. So, let’s get to unmasking and figure out which characters are most likely to be Skrulls.

Hulk

Bruce Banner and Hulk as a Skrull Avengers Theory

Bruce Banner was unable to bring out the Hulk and seemed to have weird lapses in memory during the events of Infinity War. Although some fans believe this is because Hulk is actually Loki, what if Hulk is actually a Skrull? One theory suggests that a Skrull defeated Hulk in Age of Ultron and went to Sakaar to learn how to control Hulk’s power.

The Hulk could actually be the Skrull’s true form, rather than the result of gamma radiation, as he attempted to gain control of Banner’s persona. Now that the Skrull has mastered Banner's personality in Infinity War, he’s incapable of bringing out the Hulk, or the Skrull's true form.

Phil Coulson

Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser in Captain Marvel

Nick Fury says the last time he trusted someone, he lost an eye. Since he has two eyes in Captain Marvel, we may finally see the moment Fury earns his patch. In the trailer, we learn that Skrulls have infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. and are rising through the ranks. As a key member of the organization, Coulson would be the perfect agent for a Skrull to impersonate.

This could explain why Fury becomes so squirrely in Captain America: Winter Soldier. As soon as he finds out S.H.I.E.L.D. has been infiltrated, he fakes his own demise and removes himself from the entire situation.

Captain Mar-Vell… or whoever Jude Law is playing

Jude Law as Yon-Rogg in Captain Marvel

We still don’t know who Jude Law is playing in Captain Marvel. However, whether he’s playing Captain Mar-Vell or Yon-Rogg, it might not matter if he’s simply a Skrull in disguise. The Captain Marvel trailers seem to suggest Jude Law’s character will turn out to be a villain. Therefore, one theory states that Carol Danvers will become Captain Marvel after Jude Law’s character betrays her.

The biggest betrayal for a Kree like Danvers would be to find out that someone she trusted was actually a Skrull in disguise. This would set up a great story for Danvers as she struggles to understand her identity as well as the true persona of her friend.

Thor

During the first two Thor films, the God of Thunder was very serious and never cracked a joke. Then, in his third film, Thor suddenly became the funniest Avenger. This major personality change was attributed to a new director and cinematic vision, but it could also be explained by a Skrull taking over Thor’s persona.

Thor also knew about the location of the Infinity Stones prior to the third film, but all of a sudden lost his memory of them. In Infinity War, the new Thor also has some odd bouts of unexplained knowledge that he lays on the Guardians throughout the entire film.

Wong

A couple of months ago, Benedict Wong posted a photo of himself on the set of Avengers: Endgame that proves he survived the decimation. However, the image may have also confirmed that Wong only survived because he’s a Skrull.

Wong disappeared in Infinity War despite the fact that the universe was falling to pieces. As a master of the Mystic Arts, he had many skills that would’ve greatly helped the Avengers, but he chose to hide away in the Sanctum Sanctorum. Could this be because he’s actually a Skrull who simply had other catastrophic plans?

Hawkeye

Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye in Avengers Endgame

Ant-Man and the Wasp was supposed to reveal why Hawkeye and Ant-Man were not in Infinity War. Hawkeye was on house arrest and wanted to focus on his family. Therefore, he didn’t interfere when the Black Order came to Earth or when Thanos went on his mission to destroy half the universe.

However, wouldn’t these major emergencies still cause Hawkeye to come out of hiding and help the Avengers? If his family was at risk of being dusted, he definitely would've fought for their lives. Therefore, the only real explanation as to why he never came out to help is because he’s actually a Skrull that simply didn’t want the Avengers to succeed.

General Thaddeus Ross

Ross was most likely in the Army during the time of the Captain Marvel movies, and if there was a Kree-Skrull war, he probably would’ve been called to the line of duty to fight. If he was a Skrull, this would give him the perfect opportunity to place himself in a position of power, help S.H.I.E.L.D. cover up the war, and set the Skrull invasion into motion.

Over the next couple of years, he probably rose through the ranks and recruited other Skrulls to replace the heroes around him when they were most vulnerable. Now that the Avengers are divided and weak, the Skrulls can start their true invasion in Avengers: Endgame.

Black Widow

10 Superheroes Who Have Had The Most MCU Appearances

Natasha is no stranger to changing her physical appearance, but what if these disguises are actually a cover for her Skrull abilities? This would explain why Black Widow changes her look throughout the films without any real reason or explanation. It also could clarify why she has so many love interests throughout the movie.

The Skrull impersonating Natasha could be flirting with the Avengers to seek out her next target - maybe she already took over Captain America and Hawkeye’s body and is now working on Hulk. This could be why the relationship between her and Bruce came out of nowhere and why it seems to have disappeared in Infinity War.

Nick Fury

Nick Fury Captain Marvel Pager

If Nick Fury were revealed to be a Skrull, it would be the ultimate “blow your mind” twist that Marvel Studios would definitely be looking to throw at fans. It could also explain why Fury is missing an eye and how he survived Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

What if a Skrull simply couldn’t replicate the eye or came up with a missing eye as a gimmick to throw people off his scent? Then, in Winter Soldier, the Skrull impersonating Fury could’ve actually perished, but since the position was too much to give up, the Skrull army put another creature in its place, bringing Nick Fury back to life.

Captain Marvel

The trailers for Captain Marvel reveal that Carol Danvers is struggling with her memories in the film. What if she’s struggling because those memories aren’t actually hers? Danvers could have trouble remembering her past because she’s actually a Skrull that was injected with parts of the real Carol’s memories.

In the trailer, she seems to go by “Vers”, which is probably because that’s the only part of her dog tag that the Skrulls were able to find when she crash-landed on their planet. That might be the name the Skrull took. If Captain Marvel is actually a Skrull, this could also spell trouble for the Avengers in Avengers: Endgame.
