Lashana Lynch, who plays Captain Marvel character Maria Rambeau, recently revealed she auditioned for other roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Maria is a key part of the 2019 movie, playing a pivotal role in Carol Danvers' journey. As the superhero's friend and fellow Air Force pilot, Maria provides a connection to Carol's life on Earth. Maria's daughter, Monica, also appears in the '90s-set film and will have an impact on the MCU going forward. Teyonah Parris will play the adult version of Monica in Marvel's upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision.

Lynch is very much a star on the rise right now. Though Captain Marvel was her breakout film role, she also starred in ABC's Still Star-Crossed as Rosaline Capulet in 2017. Her most exciting upcoming performance will come next year, when the James Bond movie No Time to Die finally releases. Lynch will play Nomi, who's already confirmed to be the new 007. This is an especially thrilling component of the film, especially since it will be star Daniel Craig's last time playing Bond.

Though No Time to Die is several months away from its new April 2, 2021 release date, those who worked on the film, including Lynch, have continued press. Recently, the actor spoke with Britain's GQ about the role, also sharing a tidbit about her journey to Captain Marvel:

I’d been taping for years. [Casting director] Sarah Finn at Marvel knew me in and out because I’d taped for many roles, big and small...Black Panther – I won’t say [whom], because I’ve got friends in the film – Venom, an Avengers film... There were a good handful.

Captain Marvel Brie Larson Lashana Lynch

Lynch's comments echo co-star Brie Larson's, who's been similarly open about her audition history, including in the MCU. However, Larson and Lynch don't share any overlap, as Larson auditioned for the earlier MCU films Iron Man 2 and Thor. Like with Larson, it's hard to know for sure which parts Lynch was up for. In Black Panther, there are three main characters around Lynch's age: Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and Shuri (Letitia Wright). It's likely she auditioned for one of those, though it may have been a more minor role. It's also difficult to narrow down which part Lynch tried out for in Venom and especially Avengers, as she doesn't specify the movie.

At this point, it's impossible to imagine Lynch playing anyone but Maria Rambeau in the MCU. The actor is well-suited for the Captain Marvel role, and her chemistry with Larson was a high point of the film. Though Lynch was no doubt disappointed when she missed out on past MCU movies at the time, her journey shows the right part was out there all along. It's a great lesson for those working in Hollywood and other industries as well.
