Without Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel likely never becomes a hero, as Carol Danvers inspired Kamala Khan as she turned to her greatest inspiration for advice on balancing responsibility and powers. However, in the controversial Civil War II storyline, Captain Marvel's misguided actions were so out of character that they not only nearly cost her her relationship with Ms. Marvel but led the young hero to join forces against her greatest idol.

Ms. Marvel will forever be tied to Captain Marvel, as she gained her superhero name, costume colors, and heroic mindset from the Avenger. Kamala Khan was always Carol's biggest fan, so when she gained powers after being exposed to Terrigen Mist, she decided she wanted to be like Carol while finding her own path as a superhero. Carol has served as a mentor and inspiration to Kamala and became close to her. However, when a second Civil War broke out in the Marvel Universe, Captain Marvel's actions forced Kamala to side against her - an act Carol saw as a betrayal.

Civil War II was a particularly rough chapter for Carol Danvers. After discovering a new Inhuman, Ulysses, who could predict the future, Captain Marvel used the abilities to stop crimes before they happened. Iron Man didn't agree with Carol's methods which caused conflict between the Avengers, resulting in the deaths of War Machine and Bruce Banner, while She-Hulk was also nearly killed. Ulysses' visions proved to be inconsistent and after seeing Spider-Man kill Captain America, Captain Marvel put Iron Man in a coma. But, before that happened, Ms. Marvel joined team Iron Man after seeing Carol's destructive tendencies, leading to Captain Marvel denouncing her biggest fan and ally.

Captain Marvel confronts Ms. Marvel in Marvel Comics.

In Ms. Marvel #11 by G. Willow Wilson, Takeshi Miyazawa, Adrian Alphona, Ian Herring, and Joe Caramagna, Kamala stages a fake heist to lure the Carol Cadets (Captain Marvel's Jersey City precog task force) and show the dangers of Ulysses' visions. The plan works and Carol arrives on the scene telling Ms. Marvel she's lucky she doesn't hand her to the FBI. Ms. Marvel tells Captain Marvel she doesn't agree with arresting people before they commit a crime and calls in Iron Man as backup. Carol responds by telling Kamala her trust was misplaced and she never should have let her wore her colors. Ms. Marvel recounts the moments as being "worse than pretty much anything."

Captain Marvel's arc in Civil War II made her an unintentional villain and helped permanently fracture her relationship with Kamala. While the pair will team up in the recently announced The Marvels film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and their relationship will surely play a part in the upcoming Ms. Marvel TV show, Carol Danvers' actions forced Ms. Marvel to take a stand against her. Ms. Marvel was forced to turn on her greatest ally. Hopefully, the plotline never makes its way into the MCU, at least as in the same way it was shown in Civil War II. Although some good was gained from the confrontation, as Kamala's separation from Carol forced her to find her own way as a hero.
