Production of Captain Marvel is moving to New Orleans at the end of June. It was reported back in November that the upcoming film may shoot in Louisiana. The move to New Orleans is adding to fan speculation that Still Star-Crossed actress Lashana Lynch will play Monica Rambeau, the first female superhero to take the "Captain Marvel" name.
Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Air Force pilot Carol Danvers. Directed by Ann Boden and Ryan Fleck, the film will see Danvers develop super powers after having her DNA fused with an alien. The film's cast includes a number of established characters from the MCU, such as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou), and Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace). Danvers will somehow be thrust into the Kree-Skrull War, a major event from the comic books.
Omega Underground reports that Captain Marvel will begin filming in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 26th. The shoot may also include scenes in Baton Rouge. The bulk of the film has already been shot in Los Angeles.
Fans have noted that New Orleans is the birthplace of Monica Rambeau, a character rumored to appear in the film since the casting of She's Gotta Have it star DeWanda Wise in an unknown role. Wise later dropped out and was replaced by Lashana Lynch. Other details have hinted that Lynch may be playing a different character, but there have yet to be any official details.
The New Orleans location does seem to provide evidence for the Monica Rambeau rumors. In the comic books, Rambeau was a cargo ship captain from Louisiana whose exposure to a powerful weapon gave her the power to transform her body into any form of energy from the electromagnetic spectrum. After joining the Avengers and becoming a full-fledged superhero, Rambeau periodically returned to her parents' home in New Orleans.
It's worth noting that Rambeau preceded Carol Danvers by over 30 years in becoming the first female Captain Marvel, and only the second hero in the history of Marvel Comics to use the name. Unlike Danvers and other heroes who have worn the mantle, Rambeau's decision to use the name was simply a coincidence. The character actually has no connection to Mar-Vell's legacy, which is one reason why some fans are doubting that Rambeau will have any part in the movie.
