Marvel looks to have added She's Gotta Have It star DeWanda Wise as a co-star in Captain Marvel. Marvel Studios is gearing up for the start of production on their first female led film. Captain Marvel is set to have a short period of filming later this month before production kicks into full gear later this spring, so Marvel has been busy rounding out the cast. It was previously announced Brie Larson will star as the titular heroine Carol Danvers - making her the first female to lead a solo Marvel film.

Filling out the cast around Larson is Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Jude Law. With Captain Marvel also marking the first MCU movie directed by a female, the cast so far had yet to add any other female roles. Now, it looks to have filled its biggest one.

Deadline reports DeWanda Wise is the newest cast member of Captain Marvel. She is currently fresh off a role in She's Gotta Have It on Netflix, but no word on who she is playing is available at this time. However, Deadline does describe her role as a co-star, which should indicate a major role for Wise. With a potentially sizable role, it may be possible she is playing Carol's best friend and fellow superhero Monica Rambeau.

She's Gotta Have It, DeWanda Wise as Nola Darling

There is no question this will be Wise’s biggest role to date. Her role as Nola Darling in She’s Gotta Have It is her most significant work yet, and after primarily working in TV, this is the type of role that could open the doors for even more high-profile work. As a rising actor in the Hollywood system, Wise should be in great company for her first major blockbuster role. What has yet to be determined is just how big of a role this will be.

While the early speculation could point to Monica Rambeau, it is just one option. Previous casting calls for Captain Marvel showed the movie was searching for a main female Skrull. Wise could be filling that role, but that may be too minor. THR calls it a supporting role, so playing a Skrull or even a Kree could fit. But, if she is Rambeau, Wise just signed on for a potentially lengthy and important part depending on Marvel Studios’ plans. Hopefully, the speculation won’t last forever and confirmation on the character will come soon. But until then, it is just nice to see Captain Marvel continuing to make progress in the casting department.
