Warning! Spoilers for Captain Marvel #31 ahead!

Captain Marvel is about to face an unwelcome blast from the past as her "evil" costume makes a reappearance, worn by a mysterious new adversary. While Captain Marvel has returned to her familiar blue duds after her brief foray into magic, it looks like someone else has repurposed one of her most sinister costumes for an equally destructive ends. This developments kicks off the ominous "Last of the Marvels" arc in the Captain Marvel ongoing series.

Captain Marvel #31, written by Kelly Thompson with art by Takeshi Miyazawa, sees Carol Danvers, recently reconciled with her lover War Machine, recruited for a mission by her Kree sister Lauri. The trio battles the mysterious life-form Sludge, before a mysterious figure waiting in the wings tells the defeated Sludge it did excellent work. It's unknown if this figure is wearing Carol's dark costume or not, though it's certainly possible this is a separate mystery character pulling the strings.

Captain Marvel wore her dark costume when she was forced to take down her Avengers colleagues one by one while working for the villain Vox Supreme, way back in the "Last Avenger" arc. The end of the issue teases the return of the costume, with Carol battling what looks to be an evil Captain Marvel. Interestingly, the figure also has a lot of the same features as Carol, such as her blonde hair. The solicitations for upcoming issues also question the whereabouts of Vox Supreme, last seen imprisoned in the Raft. All of this amounts to a mysterious, evil Captain Marvel terrorizing the galaxy.

It seems likely the aforementioned Sludge is somehow responsible for the emergence of this new Captain Marvel. The Sludge showed the ability to eat DNA, and at one point even took the form of the original Captain Mar-Vell when confronting Carol and company. Perhaps the Sludge plays a role in the creation of this new, evil Captain Marvel, either by using the DNA of the original Captain Mar-Vell, or even directly acquiring the DNA of Carol somehow. Either way, this does not bode well for Carol and her allies, nor for the rest of the galaxy.

The premise has a solid touch of irony. After all, Captain Marvel used the dark costume to take down Avenger after Avenger, though she managed to ultimately trick Vox Supreme and save her teammates. Now, however, someone wearing the same costume is coming for her, giving Captain Marvel an unwelcome taste of her own medicine. Just how this fits into Vox Supreme plan - if, in fact, it is Vox Supreme - remains to be seen. One thing is for sure though - Captain Marvel will be fighting her own path tooth and nail through the "Last of the Marvels" arc, and it's hard to see just which Captain Marvel will come out on top.
