Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel is currently tracking to open on par with Captain America: Civil War in China. The Marvel Cinematic Universe's first female-led film is already picking up great buzz from early critical reactions and it will just be a matter of days before general audiences get a chance to see the movie around the world.

Even though this will be Brie Larson's MCU debut as Carol Danvers, the combination of a female superhero film, the cosmic adventure, and just enough familiar characters like Nick Fury have helped generate plenty of excitement for Captain Marvel. This became even more clear when early projections for the film's opening weekend domestically called for a $160 million 3-day run. Such an opening would put Captain Marvel in elite company, but the film's global opening weekend is positioned to be incredibly large too.

Marvel isn't heavily staggering the rollout for Captain Marvel, with every major territory (except Japan) set to launch the film next weekend. This includes China, which continues to become one of the most important markets for blockbusters to hit, and the excitement is reportedly quite high. According to Chinese box office tracker Gavin FengCaptain Marvel's early pre-sale ticket numbers put the film on track to earn $75-$85 million in China. However, these pre-sales are actually said to be on par with Captain America: Civil War, which launched to over $90 million in China in 2016, so it sounds like Captain Marvel will exceed the projected range.

If Captain Marvel is able to top Captain America: Civil War's Chinese opening weekend, it will be the third largest opening in China for a MCU film - only falling behind Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War (China's highest opening weekend ever). It is still not a guarantee that Larson's solo film will indeed hit these figures, but it will give the film an even stronger start if it does. Thanks to the nearly simultaneous release, Captain Marvel may have the opportunity to go down as one of the biggest worldwide opening weekends of all time.

These latest projections are just the latest piece of evidence that points to Captain Marvel doing just fine at the box office. The film's IMAX pre-sales are tracking ahead of Thor: Ragnarok, which opened to $122 million domestically. With the red carpet premiere set for this coming Monday and the review embargo lifting shortly after, the box office predictions may climb even higher if the reactions continue to be very positive. Final tracking numbers should arrive next week that give a much clearer idea of how Captain Marvel will perform at the box office, but it already looks very promising if any of these projections are accurate.
