Moxie director Amy Poehler has pitched a new comic-relief character for her to play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Captain Marvel’s sister. The Emmy award-winning actress is best known for her time as a Saturday Night Live cast member and as optimist Leslie Knope, the lead character in NBC’s beloved sitcom Parks and Recreation. Poehler recently hosted the 2021 Golden Globes with long-time collaborator Tina Fey, where they used their monologue to criticize the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for their controversial lack of diversity.

Poehler is currently on a press tour promoting her film Moxie, a comedy-drama adapted from Jennifer Mathieu’s 2015 novel of the same name. The latest Netflix original movie stars Hadley Robinson as Vivian Carter, a teenage girl who is inspired to create her own anonymous Riot Grrrl zine after discovering her mother’s rebellious past as part of the feminist movement. In addition to directing the film, Poehler stars as Vivian’s mom Lisa. Poehler’s characters are often passionate about feminism, whether she’s championing ‘Galentine’s Day’ in Parks and Recreation or encouraging a coming-of-age feminist revolution at Vivian’s high school in Moxie.

Now, in an interview with fellow SNL alum on Late Night with Seth Meyers, she’s invented a new character to help out feminist superhero Captain Marvel, her bossy and responsible sister, Gretchen. Read the full quote below:

"I do feel like there’s a lot of room in the Marvel Universe for people who could be just like the helpers. I feel like I could be Brie Larson’s bossy sister who’s not in the biz… I feel like there could be somebody who’s turning on the lasers. Because you never see that. You never see who’s turning things on and off, who’s closing up the headquarters at night."

Though it’s unlikely that Marvel will recruit Poehler to turn the lasers on and off, there’s certainly plenty of room for comedy icons to play in the MCU sandbox. Not only is Silicon Valley’s Kumail Nanjiani playing a powerful, immortal being in the upcoming Eternals, but Poehler’s fellow Parks and Recreation star Kathryn Hahn has recently become one of the MCU’s most memorable villains as evil witch Agatha Harkness in WandaVision. Ant-Man star Paul Rudd even had a memorable turn on Parks and Recreation as Leslie’s competitor, Bobby Newport, during her city council campaign.

Clearly, Poehler has a fair few good connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe through her fellow Parks and Recreation alumni. MCU movies are often filled with memorable supporting characters that add some comedy and levity to the franchise. Poehler is clearly joking, but with the MCU expanding on Disney+ with more experimental shows like What If...? , a new series about the background characters isn't out of the realm of possibility. So if Captain Marvel ever does need someone to close up headquarters at night, Marvel knows who to call.
