Warning! Spoilers for Captain Marvel #28 below!

Captain Marvel's return from a dark future where all her closest Avengers allies were killed has left her struggling with horrifying nightmares. In a new preview for Captain Marvel #28, Carol Danvers' nightmares are only getting worse, as she can't stop seeing her teammates get brutally killed when she goes to sleep.

Carol hasn't been unable to catch a break as of late in the pages of Marvel Comics. She was recently transported to a dark future, where all of her Avengers teammates were killed or brainwashed by the villainous Ove. The son of Namor and Enchantress completely demolished the Marvel Universe, leading Captain Marvel to team up with the remaining survivors, which consisted mostly of the sons and daughters of her current teammates.  The heroes win, but Ove managed to teleport to the main Marvel timeline, meaning the dark future he created was still very much in play. If that wasn't enough, it's in the future timeline Captain Marvel encountered Carol Rhodes, the daughter of her boyfriend War Machine and in order to prevent her from not existing, she breaks up with Rhodey, as Rhodes is not her child.

In previews for Captain Marvel #28 by Kelly Thompson, Jacopo Camagni, Espen Grundetjern, and VC's Clayton Cowles, Captain Marvel is shown searching through the rubble, with death and destruction surrounding her. She discovers Captain America impaled and lifeless with his shield broken beside him. After she gets hit by an explosion, she encounters more of her teammates. She tells the group, which includes Hawkeye, Spider-Man and Black Widow, to run as Ove just hit her with a powerful blast. Hawkeye responds by asking "why didn't you stop this, Carol?" asking her why she didn't kill Ove - that's when the remaining Avengers are incinerated and Carol wakes up from her nightmare.

Carol blames herself for not killing Ove in the dark future timeline and says if she can't stop him, billions of innocent people will die. She says "I don't think I can live with that."

Carol's fears aren't unfounded as she's literally just come back from a reality where Ove ruled and the Avengers died. She's not to blame for his arrival in the main timeline, even if he used her powers to do so. Still, Captain Marvel is getting terrifying nightmares because she knows Ove's takeover remains fully possible. Carol is taking the threat very seriously, as she's about to learn magic to stop Ove before it's too late and her Avengers' teammates are no more. Captain Marvel #28 is in stores next week.
