Warning! Spoilers ahead for Captain Marvel #28

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' Captain MarvelCarol Danvers is desperately trying to get someone to teach her magic, hoping that a boost in power and a means to circumvent her primary weakness will help her prevent the dark future she's just returned from. However, Doctor Strange and more of Marvel's best magical heroes are all refusing to teach her the finer points of sorcery, leading Carol to request help from the absolute last person she should learn magic from.

In Captain Marvel #28 from writer Kelly Thompson and artist Jacopo Camagni, Carol is still struggling from her adventure in the apocalyptic future, believing that she could have prevented all the destruction and tyranny of Ove, the son of Namor had she just had more power at her disposal. She specifically wants to learn magic in order to counteract Ove's power (who's now somewhere in the present), as well as the fact that it's her primary weakness. Her time in the future also lead her to break up with James Rhodes' War Machine, as she met his amazing future daughter (who wasn't hers). After a one-night stand with Doctor Strange, Carol asks the Sorcerer Supreme if he'd be willing to teach her magic so she might prevent the future death of the Avengers that she sees in her nightmares.

However, Doctor Strange refuses to teach her, believing that learning magic isn't the way to go for Carol. While he doubts her abilities and affinity to learn it, he also doesn't think it's a good idea for someone as powerful as Captain Marvel to remove one of her chief vulnerabilities. Despite his claims that he understands her fears, he still declines. This motivates Carol to ask other magicians and magic-users for help such as Magik, Scarlet Witch, and more, but they all refuse as well. Finally, the issue ends with Carol resorting to asking the last person she should ever ask: Amora the Asgardian Enchantress, and the future mother of Ove himself.

In the future, Amora helped Ove in his efforts to go back in time in order to rule it, giving her own life to send him (despite disagreeing with his actions). Her love for her son was so great, she couldn't find it in her heart to go against him, so Carol is certainly taking a big gamble here asking her for help. While it remains to be seen if Carol will tell Amora why she wants to learn magic, there's so telling how the present Enchantress would react if Captain Marvel does lay all the cards out on the table, seeing as how Ove hasn't yet been born.

Regardless, Amora is still primarily a villain/antagonist in the Marvel Universe, which shows just how desperate Carol has become. Her fear of the future has reached almost-PTSD levels, and it seems as though that's motivating Captain Marvel to make some incredibly drastic decisions. In any case, one thing's for sure: Captain Marvel fans aren't going to want to miss future issues of her series from Marvel Comics, as they're only going to get more intense and more than likely magical from here.
