A new photo from Brie Larson shows her posing with The Marvels' villain actress Zawe Ashton. Larson first took on the role of Carol Danvers in the superhero's first solo movie, Captain Marvel, in 2019. Captain Marvel then came back for Avengers: Endgame to help the team defeat Thanos before appearing in the mid-credits scene for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsCaptain Marvel got mixed reviews upon release, yet Disney confirmed a sequel was on the way at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019.

At this point, there isn't a lot known about Captain Marvel 2's story. Larson is obviously returning as Carol Danvers and will be joined by Teyonah Parris as the adult Monica Rambeau, who previously appeared on WandaVisionMCU newcomer Iman Vellani will also have a key role in the film as Ms. Marvel. With Vellani getting her own Disney+ series next year, it's possible the events of that show could set up the story for The Marvels in 2023. Aside from these three superheroes, The Marvels also includes Park Seo-Joon in an undisclosed role and Ashton, who is reportedly the villain in the sequel.

With The Marvels still over a year away, Disney hasn't started the marketing push for the sequel. While Disney hasn't released much about the sequel, Larson is quite active on social media and frequently shares workout photos and videos of her superhero training. The videos may not reveal any story details about the sequel, but one post at the beginning of December did show a new logo for The MarvelsFilming on the sequel reportedly wrapped at the end of November, so new looks at the film could be coming soon, but an official trailer and poster likely won't be released anytime soon.

Larson wants fans to start speculating about Captain Marvel 2, yet fan theories about Ashton's role started as soon as she was cast. While Ashton is expected to be the film's main villain, it's anybody's guess who she is playing at this point. If Marvel opts to go with a more well-known enemy of Carol Danvers, Moonstone could be one possibility, or even Queen Veranke, who could help tie The Marvels to the Disney+ series Secret Invasion. Marvel has often gender-swapped characters as well, which creates even more possibilities for who Ashton could be playing.
