The 2019 record-breaking film Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) as she subdues the Supreme Intelligence, but now its upcoming sequel, The Marvels, has the chance to show this villain’s true form. In the film, the Supreme Intelligence is the artificial intelligence that rules the Kree empire. It appears differently to each person, taking the form of whoever its viewer respected and admired the most. As the Supreme Intelligence appears to Carol as her mentor, Dr. Wendy Lawson (Annette Bening), she is always reminded to keep her emotions in check and put her people’s needs before her own. Later, she learns that Lawson is secretly Mar-Vell, a Kree alien masquerading in human form.

When the movie was released, directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck revealed that originally, they intended to stick with the comics. Together with Geneva Robertson-Dworet, they wrote the movie’s early scripts, with Mar-Vell as a man. In fact, they had already started looking for a male actor when Boden suggested combining the roles of Mar-Vell and the Supreme Intelligence — into a woman. Soon enough, they found the perfect cast in Annette Bening. As expected, this decision sent many Captain Marvel comic readers into a frenzy, with some clamoring for the next film to show the villain’s original form.

Fortunately, there is a glimmer of hope, as The Marvels’ new director Nia DaCosta steps in. While the Candyman director hinted at the plethora of surprises the sequel has in store, viewers can expect a “cosmic adventure with Carol, Monica, and Kamala,” as The Marvels’ synopsis teases. Hopefully, as they go higher, further, and faster, the true form of the Supreme Intelligence will also be revealed, finally making use of a previous cut MCU scene.>

Annette Bening and the comic version of Supreme Intelligence

Also known as the Supremor, the Supreme Intelligence first appeared in 1967’s Fantastic Four #65. Traditionally, it looked like a large, gooey, disembodied green head attached to branch-looking wires. Viewers got a glimpse of the Supreme Intelligence’s comic-book form when a deleted scene from Captain Marvel was included in The Infinity Saga box set. Although the scene starts out similarly to Carol’s awakening and final confrontation with the alien ruler, her attacks of energy blasts just land in a pool of water. From there, the Supreme Intelligence’s comic form emerges and threatens Carol.<

Ultimately, the scene was removed from the final cut, as Marvel felt the big reveal would be a possible distraction from Carol transforming into Captain Marvel. Instead, the film ends with Carol sending Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) back to Hala, with a message back to the Supreme Intelligence, declaring that she’s “coming to end it. The war, the lies, all of it.” It is then highly plausible that in Carol’s making good on her promise, the Supremor’s true form will be featured in the sequel.

This is especially true since the multiverse of witches, variants, and ancient beings has been welcomed by Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Four. If Marvel can finally embrace and explain magic, madness, and weirdness, certainly there is room for the Supreme Intelligence in all its comic-book glory, and with Captain Marvel, Photon, and Ms. Marvel in one film, there is no telling what The Marvels holds.
