Warning: SPOILERS for WandaVision Episode 9 - "The Series Finale"

The WandaVision finale's post-credits scene sets up Monica Rambeau's (Teyonah Parris) roles in Captain Marvel 2 and Secret Invasion on Disney+, signaling a bright future for the superpowered S.W.O.R.D. agent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Monica was a key player in WandaVision, which also turned out to be her origin story since she acquired her own superpowers thanks to the magic of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen).

Before she was Captain Rambeau of S.W.O.R.D. in the MCU of 2023, Monica debuted as an 11-year-old  in Captain Marvel,(played by Akira Akbar), which was set in 1995. Monica is the daughter of Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), who was a fighter pilot and best friend to Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). In 1989, Carol was imbued with the powers of the Space Infinity Stone and was taken by the Kree. She returned six years later and sought out Maria, who was living in New Orleans with her daughter Monica. After Maria, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and a group of Skrulls led by Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) helped Carol save Earth from the Kree, Danvers returned to outer space. Despite her promise to return, Carol stayed away until after Thanos (Josh Brolin) wiped out half of all life in the universe in Avengers: Infinity War, which was set in 2018.

Monica was one of the billions killed by Thanos but was resurrected thanks to the Avengers assembling their own Infinity Gauntlet in Avengers: Endgame. Tragically, Monica learned her mother died of cancer in the years of her absence. Maria Rambeau was founder and director of S.W.O.R.D. and Monica continued her mother's legacy as a captain and test pilot. But the S.W.O.R.D. Monica returned to in WandaVision had changed under Acting Director Tyler Hayward (Josh Stamberg), who shifted the agency into the creation of sentient weapons thanks to their acquisition of Vision's (Paul Bettany) remains. After Monica passed through the barrier and returned from The Hex, wherein she had a brief guest-starring role in the in-universe WandaVision, Hayward secretly monitored Rambeau's DNA because she was changing thanks to Wanda Maximoff's magic.

Captain Rambeau re-entered the Hex to help Wanda and her genetic code was completely rewritten, turning her into one of the newest superheroes in the MCU. Monica exposed the fake Pietro Maximoff (Evan Peters) as a man named Ralph Bohner being controlled by Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) and she helped protect Wanda and Vision's twin sons from Hayward, who was later arrested. But Monica Rambeau's adventure is just beginning – here's how she'll be a major player in another Disney+ show, Secret Invasion, as well as Captain Marvel 2.

WandaVision's Post-Credits Bring Monica Rambeau Into Secret Invasion

WandaVision Episode 9 Post-Credits Scene Skrull

In the first of the WandaVision finale's two post-credits scenes, Monica was summoned to Westview's Coronet movie theater by a S.W.O.R.D. agent who revealed herself to be a Skrull (Lori Livingston). The Skrull told Monica that an "old friend" of her mother's wanted to meet with her. The Skrull is likely referring to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and the Skrull pointed upward, meaning the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s meeting with Captain Rambeau may happen in space. This delighted Monica since going to space was her mission in S.W.O.R.D. and she's excited to go back.

It's not clear if Monica has encountered Skrulls since Talos and his friends came to her house when she was a child but Rambeau is familiar with the shape-shifting aliens. In Marvel Comics' Secret Invasion saga, the Skrulls were villains replacing key figures and superheroes as they tried to take over the Earth, but Captain Marvel established the Skrulls as good guys in the MCU, and victims of the Kree. It could also be possible that a faction of the Skrull race has plans to conquer Earth and they are opposed by the Skrulls aligned with Nick Fury. Or it could be the Kree or another legion of aliens which Fury and his allied Skrulls are looking to stop. Either way, her familiarity with the Skrulls, her credentials as an astronaut, and her new superpowers, all mean Monica is poised to be a big player in Secret Invasion.

Nick Fury's Real S.W.O.R.D. Explained

The last time Nick Fury was seen in the MCU was in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home after it was revealed that Talos was posing as Fury throughout the film. Curiously, Spider-Man: Far From Home is set months after the events of WandaVision so the meeting between Fury and Monica had undoubtedly already happened. Amusingly, Fury was also wrapping up a vacation in Spider-Man: Far From Home, which indicates that Secret Invasion happens afterward since he urged his Skrull helpers to go "back to work".

Fans widely believed that Fury was running S.W.O.R.D. in Spider-Man: Far From Home but WandaVision debunked that by revealing S.W.O.R.D. has been operating for years, and possibly decades. It existed concurrently with S.H.I.E.L.D., and the interior design of S.W.O.R.D.'s headquarters even resembles S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Triskelion, but S.W.O.R.D. was apparently not infiltrated by Hydra and didn't collapse when S.H.I.E.L.D. did in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Fury's alliance with the Skrulls may be an independent group Fury is running, and it isn't clear if Fury and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) were already running their outer-space outfit when they were both dusted by Thanos' snap in Avengers: Infinity War. It's possible Fury rededicated himself to fighting aliens after he returned to life in Avengers: Endgame.

Since WandaVision takes place only a few weeks after Avengers: Endgame, Fury's outer-space mission may just be getting started when the Skrull agent recruited Monica Rambeau. Perhaps Fury called upon his old Skrull allies after he came back to life or Talos sought him out because of a new threat from outer space. It's not even clear if Fury has any official affiliation with S.W.O.R.D. Regardless, Fury has shifted his gaze to the stars and appears to be fighting the danger approaching Earth in Secret Invasion. Fury clearly has access to a spaceship and alien tech to take on the invaders as well as a new superhero in Monica Rambeau.

Monica's Powers Make Her Another Captain Marvel

Monica Rambeau Powers in WandaVision

In WandaVision, Monica is freshly superpowered and she probably hasn't tapped into the full spectrum of her abilities, but she has the potential to be the equal of Captain Marvel. In fact, in the comics, Monica took on the name Captain Marvel for a time, and she was also known as Photon and Spectrum. Rambeau was both a member of the Avengers and a teammate of Carol Danvers in The Ultimates. In the MCU, Monica's powers are derived from going through Wanda Maximoff's Hex; WandaVision established that Scarlet Witch is both powered by the Mind Infinity Stone and chaos magic. So, like Carol Danvers, Rambeau derives her abilities from the power of an Infinity Stone, although chaos magic may also add a layer to what Monica can do.

Thus far, Monica's altered physiology has manifested in her being able to see the world through the electromagnetic spectrum. She can also absorb energy, including Wanda's crimson blasts, and she can turn intangible, such as when Tyler Hayward shot at her and the bullets phased right through Monica. In the comics, Rambeau can also fly and emit her own photon blasts, and it's likely that Monica will develop and display these powers in her next couple of MCU appearances. It's possible that Secret Invasion will hit Disney+ before Captain Marvel 2 lands in theaters in November 2022, and by the time Monica meets Carol Danvers again, she could be at peak power levels.

Monica And Captain Marvel Have Issues To Resolve

Monica Rambeau wandavision Captain Marvel

Monica Rambeau has a serious bone to pick with Carol Danvers, which is a far cry from how close they were in Captain Marvel. But Monica is no longer the little sidekick Danvers affectionately nicknamed "Lieutenant Trouble". Rambeau is still grieving from the death of her mother, and she even admitted to Wanda that she would resurrect Maria if she had Scarlet Witch's magic. The way Monica feels about Carol, tensions will come to a head in Captain Marvel 2. Rambeau might even decide Danvers isn't worthy of her codename and Monica could adopt the Captain Marvel name for herself.

Carol Danvers probably isn't even aware of Monica's harsh feelings because so far away, and that's precisely the reason for Rambeau's animosity. Monica's bitterness likely stems from the fact that, despite her promise in Captain Marvel, Carol never returned to Earth until after the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Maria, Carol's best friend, became terminally sick from cancer and died alone while Danvers was off-world. Monica also likely discovered that Carol did return to Earth when Nick Fury used his pager to call her, but Danvers must not have checked up on Maria before her death. Carol may be surprised that Monica is furious at her and Captain Marvel 2 could showcase a potential battle between two Captain Marvels just as two Captain Americas fought in Avengers: Endgame and two Visions battled in WandaVision.
